1. Water Audit - Objectives
• Estimate water consumption of downtown campus
• Break down consumption per building/usage
• Investigate Water Conservation Measures (WCM)
• Evaluate potential of WCMs
• Added objectives (from SPF):
• Give opportunity for student projects
• Communicate findings to the community

2. Water Audit - Methodology
• Main buildings only – Downtown
• Five categories:
• Operational Water-cooled equipment, cooling towers, boilers, hot water closed circuits, chilled water closed circuits, maintenance sinks
• Hygiene Bathroom sinks, urinals, toilets, kitchen sinks, drinking fountains, showers
• Landscaping
• Food Services Water used to process food, wash dishes, and for coffee/tea and other beverages
• Research and Academia Identified research, estimated remaining research
2. Water Audit - Operational
• From Building Operations: metered data re. cooling towers, hot and chilled water closed circuits
• From Utilities & Energy Mgmt: metered data re. boilers
• From Building Services: info re. custodial
• From BPA/Adrian N.: estimate of water consumption of once-through water-cooled equipment
2. Water Audit - Hygiene
• Survey of fixtures (bathroom sinks, urinals, toilets, sinks, drinking fountains, showers) based on floor plans
• Walkthrough of building to confirm information on floor plans + note age of the fixture
• Find reference re. amount of water used by usage of the fixture (e.g., liters per flush)
• Estimate number of use of each fixture per building (based on even density of occupation)
• Compile data for each building
2. Water Audit – Landscaping & Food
• Landscaping: Estimate water consumption based on data from Ground Services: frequency of watering of trees, flower beds, etc.
• Food Services: Survey of fixtures on floor plans + walkthrough of buildings + estimate of coffee/tea consumption per person per day. Note: no major cafeteria included in study.
2. Water Audit – Research and Acad.
• “The biggest unknown”
• Contacted building directors to be in touch w lab technicians / building occupants. Very little feedback.
• Walkthrough of the buildings.
• Good feedback from Animal Facilities (re. cage washers, aquariums in Stewart Biology)

Known and unknown parameters:
• Operational: known
• Hygiene: known (estimated)
• Landscaping: known (estimated)

1. Compare compiled data to metered data for these buildings, assign
difference to Research and Academia
2. Extrapolate Research and Academia to the other buildings audited
3. Extrapolate result to the rest of the campus

Total annual consumption – Downtown Campus
• 1.8 to 2.3 million cubic meters (1.8 to 2.3 billion litres)
• Equivalent of 720 to 920 Olympic pools
• Equivalent of Kheop’s Pyramid
• Equivalent of flooding the Island of Montreal under 5 cm of water

4. MELS Objectives
10% reduction by 2014-04, 20% by 2017-04 – Relative to “baseline”
• General recommendations: install water flow meters and audit main remaining
buildings (self-funded units (Athletics, Residences, SSMU, Student Services), Strathcona Music, New Music, Ludmer, Duff Medical, and Macdonald Campus)
• Hygiene: • Continue policy on installing low flow equipment during renovations (5%) • Consider of grey water, such as rain water in new development (3%)
• Operational:
• Consider reusing blow down water from cooling towers as gray water in new development (1.4%) • Replace once-through cooling units with air cooled units, connect equipment to the cooling tower
circuit, or install individual evaporators and condensers (15%) • Install new water treatment technology for the cooling towers. New chemical free water treatment
methods are available on the market.
• Research and Academia: • Look into cage washer water reuse technology. • Reuse water concentrate from reverses osmosis systems.
