Finding the slope of a line given a graphRecall slope of a line is Or the amount the graph goes up divided by the amount that the graph goes over.

When calculating slope always go from left to right on the graph

Always find 2 points

Example 1

𝑅𝐼𝑆𝐸𝑅𝑈𝑁

Slope (m) =

Example 2 𝑅𝐼𝑆𝐸

𝑅𝑈𝑁

M =

2 parts to a linear equation

1. Slope = = m

2. Y intercept = b*the point where the graph crosses the y-axis

𝑅𝐼𝑆𝐸𝑅𝑈𝑁

Y intercept = B=

Let’s try a few

Work in teams to find the slope and y-intercept of the graphs

SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM

Graphing from an equation in slope intercept form

1.Start at your y-intercept (b)

2.Go up and over by the slope (m) always to the right first

*if the slope is a whole number only go over by 1 ie: m=2 go up 2 over 1

Y= 3x - 2

FINDING THE SLOPE OF A LINE GIVEN 2 POINTS

FOR EXAMPLE

Find the slope of the line that goes through (1,1) and (3,4)

First label the x1 and x2 and y1 and y2 values then put them into the slope equation

FIND THE SLOPE

The line goes through points (-2,-5) and (-1,3)

M=

The line goes through (-3,5) and (4,9)

M=

Writing an equation from 2 points

1. Find the slope

2. Solve using point slope form and a point from 1 of the 2 you are given

Point slope form is

The line goes through points (-2,-5) and (-1,3) M=

Re-write in slope intercept formy=

Given a slope of 3 and a line that passes through point (-1,6) find the slope intercept form of the line
