We can hardly let a military issue go bywithout some sort of blast at our belovedmilitary institutions themselves. Gaymales love to dress up like, or be subju-gated by, their worst enemies; thereforei the popularity of police uniforms, Naziuniforms and military regalia.

The old guard of the military doesn'tlike gays anymore than it likes civiliancontrol, liberals, congressional investiga-tions or peaceniks. It didn't used to likeblacks or Asians but it can't openly getaway with too much of that anymore. However, aided and abetted by the pres-ent administration, it wants no homosex-uals and has cold-bloodedly persecutedand prosecuted men with unblemishedrecords, even heroes, because someoneheard a rumor that they might be thatway.

Now along comes AIDS and the Pen-tagon has jumped in with both feet. Eve-ryone is to be tested for it. With anopportunity of this magnitude to lead theway for the rest of the country, the mil-itary has taken a stance that would havebeen admired by Attila the Hun.

There are things that the military doesadmire mightily, however: separationand duplication of its branches, theincredible pork-barreling and ineffi-ciency of the military-industrial complexand the waste of billions of dollars, mil-lions of man hours and thousands of oth-erwise excellent, talented and dedicatedmen who happen to prefer men.

The armed services lie about thenumbers of gays on their rolls. The per-centage is higher than for the civilianpopulation. The incidence of AIDS has tobe proportionately higher as well. Butinstead of leading the way for research, itprefers to stonewall it.

A friend of ours, a retired colonel, diedrecently of AIDS in a VA hospital. It tookover three months to get him in. Theirdoctors told him he merely had a low-grade infection. Then, when he becametoo ill to stay home and was forced uponthem, a needless biopsy collapsed a lungand hastened his death. It is time theylearned what the characteristics of thedisease are and how to treat them as wellas civilian medical centers do.

And it is time to stop pumping all thatmoney into obsolete bombers, MX sys-tems and tanks that run out of gas beforethey can get to battle. Instead of worryingabout "Star Wars," it is about time forthem to bring their organizations into thetwentieth century.
