Celebrate the Year of the Rooster and Support Our School!

Hello Waddell families, all languages Since CNY 2017 is a "non-performance" year, we have partnered with "Great Wall of China Restaurant" to create a spe-cial menu for Waddell families. GWC will also donate 15% of the bill back to WLA specifically to buy Chinese costumes. We need about $1000 more to replace the tattered costumes that were donated by the Confucius Institute 7 years ago. Costumes are for the CNY performances on even numbered years. Donation applies to meals after 5pm, whether or special CNY or regular menu. If you have children or small appetites, one suggestion is to get 4-6 adults and order extra kid favorites like dumplings or noodles. Get together your children's schoolmates & friends. Think of it like a giant dinner play date!! Left overs are also very tasty. Don't forget to get re-ceipts as we need to eat about $6700 of food. Partnering with the Charlotte businesses is one way of getting good publicity for the school, one of the Advocacy objec-tives. CNY 2017 is a pilot project which we hope to do in the future with great French, Japanese, Spanish & German res-taurants in Charlotte. Queen's Feast (aka Restaurant Week) is the same time (Fri 1/20-Fri 1/27). How-ever, special CNY menu looks delicious and is a much better value ($20 for 7 dishes-duh?). Celebrate CNY with an incredible meal. Support your school. "Waddell Week at the Wall". Reservations recommended. See you there!!! Welcome Chinese New Year of the Rooster!

Important Message about CMS Make Up Days due to Inclement Weather
At its Jan. 10 meeting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to change the make-up day for the Jan.
10 snow day to Jan. 24 from Feb. 20. This change has several benefits. It gives teachers an additional day to work
with students in preparation for End-of-Course tests which will now begin on Jan. 18. It preserves the option to
use Feb. 20 as a make-up day if needed in the future.
It also reduces the risk of having to use Memorial Day as a future make-up day. As a result, the make-up days for
the two severe weather days this week will now be Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Friday, Feb. 17. You can find the re-
vised CMS 2016-2017 School Calendar at www.cms.k12.nc.us. Just click on the Calendars tab in the Quicklinks sec-
tion.

New and returning parents - we are happy to announce that Waddell is contin-
uing to participate in the Crayola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful pro-
gram where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new
products. Teachers will have collection boxes in the workrooms where they
can drop off old markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. Parents can
send in their old markers as well by placing them in a bag or envelope labeled
"ColorCycle Donation". Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly pro-
gram! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them
out of the landfill.
If anyone has any questions, please contact Amelia Beonde at amelia.beonde@gmail.com or Heather Hensley at hhensley216@gmail.com. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info.
Help Raise Money for our school! Our School Code is 2455
Shop at Publix?
Please pick up a Publix shopper card in the front office. Cards are on Karen Bryer’s desk. A percentage of your purchases will be awarded to Waddell! Cards may be used in all stores ex-cept those in Florida.
MightyNest for Schools
If you are interested in “green” products for you or your home, check out MightyNest. This amount can even increase to 20% during the holidays. Please visit http://schools.mightynest.com/schools/nc/charlotte/waddell-language-academy to sign up as a supporter and they will give $1 to Waddell just for signing up!

Learn more about iGive!
iGive is an EASY way to raise money for the school. They will donate a small percentage of your purchases when
you shop online at various sites. This has the potential to generate some $ over the holidays! You DO HAVE TO IN-
STALL their "button" which will appear on your toolbar. When you go to certain sites a notice will pop up indicating the
percentage of your purchase that will go to the school. You click the notice and that is it! A few have signed up, but
did not install the "button." When you go to the link you'll see that Waddell can get an additional $10 if you join and
shop within 10 days. Please pay attention to the OTHER TERMS listed below. You HAVE to meet these guidelines in
order for the school to receive funds. A few of you have signed up but the school did NOT receive funds since you did
not meet ALL OF the guidelines.
Here is the link: https://www.iGive.com/WaddellLanguageAcademy Active Member: Being an active iGive member is important, because that generates the revenues that allow us to funnel money to our members' favorite causes. iGive defines an active member as a member who a) receives our weekly email newsletters or visits the iGive site (Home page) at least twice a month (in two different weeks), and/or b) has made a purchase from an iGive merchant at least once in the last 60 days. A member must remain active for at least three months after his or her initial registration for any initial donation or promotion to become effec-tive. Using iGive: Using iGive is defined as the member having our software download (the iGive Toolbar, Shopping Win-dow, or iGive Button) installed on the computer(s) they use to purchase goods and services on the Internet and the software is successfully connecting with the iGive servers. Successfully connecting means that the software is receiv-ing updates, and correctly responding to the member's internet surfing activity.

A Note from the School Office..
Beginning November 1, we will implement a new policy regarding replacing student ID badges. The first replacement during the school year will be free. All following re-placements will cost $1 each. Payment will be via OSP. Please remind your children not to chew, pull on, or break the badges. Students should leave the badges with their classroom or homeroom teachers at the end of the school day. Thank you for your support.
Other Reminders.. Do remember to label your child’s sweaters, hats, gloves, as well as lunch boxes, water bottles, and musical in-struments so that our lost and found does not get filled with perfectly good items that have a loving home.
Transportation Changes should be emailed to transportation.waddell@cms.k12.nc.us prior to 1:00 pm the day of the change?
Here is an example of confusing communication and good communication: Confusing example: Jane Doe Car pool # 123 Bus #321 Will be a car rider today #123, please do not put her on bus #321. She normally rides bus #321, but she should be a car rider today. Correct example: Jane Doe will be a car rider today #123 Or Jane Doe will ride the bus home today #321.

Enroll your child in the ONE Access Program today! Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support
students' ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will
have access to books and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to
use the CMS student ID number to access and check out public library resources. This exciting
initiative is called ONE Access because the CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.
Important things to know:
Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases
Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books
There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Li-
brary using ONE Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into
his/her account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and
your child the chance to see all the wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using
just your child's student ID number. The steps are outlined below.
Thank you so much and please enjoy the wealth of resources available to families and stu-
