Sweet, kind, intelligent, giving, and soft-spoken Mamie Bennett is the focal point of the
popular monthly cooking class, Cooking with Mamie; a “Quick, Easy, Elegant” style of
cooking. This class has been in existence since the Senior Enrichment Center opened
in 2007. Mamie came in for a tour one day, dipped strawberries for staff, and a
cooking class was born. She still fondly remembers making chicken paillard (pi-yahrd)
for the first of her monthly Thursday classes. Ten plus years later, she is still packing
‘em in. In 2011 she tried Meatless Mondays but she chuckled that wasn’t a hit.
Born in North Carolina and later moving to Washington, DC, Mamie met husband
Percy while they both worked for the telephone company. They came on vacations to
play tennis in Pinehurst and decided to retire here in 2006. Percy’s corporate relocations and the
Army took them to Maryland, Texas, Virginia and New Jersey. While in New Jersey, Mamie worked in
alcohol and drug rehabilitation as a personnel manager. They loved to travel and of course, play tennis
until life threw a nasty curveball in 2013 . . . Percy suffered a major stroke affecting the entire right
side of his body and brain and Mamie became a full-time caregiver. No one is ever really prepared
when a life-altering event happens, yet Mamie handles it with grace, dignity and patience. Her
beautiful smile and radiance belies the frustrations that plague the mind and soul of a caregiver.
Communication is a struggle at times, as Percy is still sharp as ever, but his brain does not cooperate
with finding the appropriate words to express his thoughts and he sometimes gets frustrated. Mamie
relaxes these days with cooking, as she likes to try new recipes, she also practices yoga and an
acquaintance commented that she is an amazing seamstress. They are blessed with good friends and
neighbors whose acts of kindness help see them through. One friend takes him to the movies; anoth-
er friend sits with Percy so Mamie can continue her cooking classes; others
invite them out to an occasional lunch or send her a card of encouragement.
The couple has one son and a grandson who will be attending the Rochester
Institute of Technology this fall. Their travels now take them visiting family
during the summer in Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, which is not far from the
Poconos. I can see tension melt away from her face as Mamie wistfully tells
me how beautiful and peaceful it is there.
There is a waiting list for Cooking with Mamie, but preference is given to
first-timers. It is no secret why there are multiple repeat students. She cooks,
explains, and then you eat! Mamie donates her time and costs as a way to
give back. She truly enjoys what she does and you can feel the love in her
cooking. We love you Mamie!

Our mission here at the Senior Enrichment Center (SEC) is to provide services that promote
the well-being of older adults. We continue to focus on preventive measures for healthy
aging. Some activities; like walking, and fitness classes are obvious. Tai chi, yoga, meditative
stretching, reiki and line dancing are very beneficial and have been available on a regular basis
at a minimal to no cost to Moore County seniors. Others; like drumming, learning a musical
instrument, and laughter are not so obvious.
Sandy Gerdes & Lenore Rittenhouse are facilitating a Laughter Therapy Club meeting the
3rd Friday of every month.
Laughter not only provides a full scale workout for your muscles, it unleashes a rush of
stress-busting endorphins. Even better, your body can’t distinguish between real and fake
laughter – any giggle will do! Researchers at the University of Michigan have calculated that
just 20 seconds of laughter could be as good for the lungs as 3 minutes on a rowing machine.
When we laugh, muscles stretch throughout our face and body, our pulse quickens and we
burn calories just like a mild workout on a treadmill. 10 – 15 minutes of laughter burned 50
calories in small study at Vanderbilt University.
“Laugh out loud” with us on Friday, June 15 at noon – learn the physiological, mental,
emotional, social and spiritual benefits of laughter to live longer and happier.
After all, laughter is the best medicine!

Kathryn Doddridge, Executive Director of The Retreat, will present a program on Moore County’s only adult day
care center on June 5 at 10 a.m. at the Senior Enrichment Center. Hosted by the Moore
County Nursing & Adult Care Homes Community Advisory Committee, the public meeting is free of charge.
The vision for The Retreat came through her years of involvement with seniors and their families in Moore County, recognizing the need for adult day health and day care as a viable alternative to in-home care or
institutionalization, with the ultimate goal of aging in place at home.
The Retreat was certified by the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Aging and Adult Services Division in
November of 2017 to provide adult day health and adult day care services.
Doddridge holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Dakota and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska. She is a seasoned healthcare professional, with expertise
in hospital administration, start-up programs and marketing and business development.
Prior to opening The Retreat, she worked in marketing and sales at a local assisted living facility. Her career includes serving as administrator of a psychiatric hospital in Rocky Mount and as the administrative director of five
emergency departments’ psychiatric services for the Catholic Health System in Richmond Virginia.
She has served as an executive board member of the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging and S.A.L.T,
Seniors and Law Enforcement Together.
This program is not an endorsement of any service but is presented in support of the CAC’s mission to provide community education regarding long term care in Moore County. Registration is requested by contacting Sandy
Nusbaum, CAC chairman, at 910-684-8246 or cacvol@twc.com

The SHIIP, Seniors’ Health Insurance Information program was
founded in 1986 by the Department of Insurance in direct response
to the growing concerns about health insurance for the more than
one million Medicare beneficiaries in North Carolina. Numerous
insurance companies sell Medicare supplements, Medicare
Advantage and other medical insurance products to people in
North Carolina. Because there are so many companies, and
because the Medicare system is so complex, SHIIP was founded to
provide people who are eligible for Medicare with an objective
information service.
Your local SHIIP experts are at The Senior Enrichment Center and
are available to schedule your personalized appointment to discuss
your needs and Medicare. Call us at 910-215-0900.

Chair Yoga is a gentle, slow practice that teaches the fundamentals of yoga poses with an emphasis
on alignment, breathing techniques, and relaxation while being seated in a chair. This twist on tradi-
tional yoga allows participants to turn their bodies and freely move their arms to achieve a variety of
yoga poses. The modified approach offers a gentle yet effective style of yoga you can do without get-
ting on the floor while still incorporating breathing and mind-body benefits of a traditional yoga class.
Descriptions for other classes are
