DIRECTIONS:Number your paper 1-8.Read the sentence and study the picture for each slide. Write the vocabulary word in italics by each number. Think about the meaning of the word using context clues and picture. As a group, come up with a “kid friendly” meaning. Write it down next to the word. Last, decide on the part of speech for that word as it is used in the sentence.

shrieks After winning the

tennis match by one point, the victor broke out in shrieks that could be heard across the court and into the stands.

bulletin board Mother left a

message attached to the bulletin board as a reminder for Charlie to do his homework after school.

mournful Sarah’s best

friend consoled her as she covered her face with her hand and mournful weeping flooded down her face.

injury After an injury to

the ankle, first rest the foot, then put ice on it followed by wrapping it with a tight bandage and then elevating it.

slurp Susie’s puppy

loved to go through the drive-through and get a drink to slurp down along with Susie.

great care in delivering food and supplies to the troops at war in Iraq.

decency One of the

practices of showing decency when a team looses is to congratulate the winners by shaking hands.

sympathy The wise dog

knew that the little girl was upset so he showed her sympathy the only way he knew how by nuzzling up next to her.
