first 2 games followed
by 3 losses, and to fin-
ish the weekend, a close win over Lake-

the weekend in a three

birth with a strong
showing at the upcom-

successful weekend by
posting two victories
over the Portage Voya-

men travelled to the 4th place Voyageurs
rink and posted a 6-4
victory with Adam
Johnson receiving the
game star and Paul Kol-

the success for the
Vikes as the team
earned an 8-2 victory
at the Encana arena.
Tanner Korchinski
took home player of the game and goal-
tender Joel Danyluk got
the win in net.
This marks an end to
the first half of league
play. The men sit 2nd
in the league and are
looking to make the
jump into first come
the second half of the
season. Wednesday,

The men's team did
battle with the Rattlers

bring it together and get to 25. Players of
the games for the
women's and men's
teams were, respec-

Matthew Yoder. Both
teams faced the same

again losing in three
sets. Jill Alcorn and

taking a breather, hop-

Rugby At Augustana?
For those of you that may not know, the ACAC is considering rugby
as a potential varsity sport.
Augustana ins looking for people interested in playing rugby for the future school year.
Rugby is an all-inclusive sport; there is no one ideal body type that will yield success. Within
that fifteen person squad, the team utilizes and embraces those body differences to their ad-
vantage.
We are specifically looking for women, to start a women’s team to create balance between
sports for each gender. However, we are looking for men as well, to start a club rugby team
and to expand skills for a possible future men’s squad. To get rugby at Augustana, we need
student numbers to get a team started, ready to play in the fall.
No experience is necessary, as rugby is a sport
that can be taught to everyone!
Next semester we will have a few clinics, one being in the first two weeks
of January: SNOW RUGBY!
Everyone interested, please contact Tamara Zembal

The Last Word: A Season of Firsts By Josh Ryan Hey folks, hope you are all coping as the first semester is coming to a close. This is a
segment I introduced last year and I decided to continue with it this year, highlighting
various “firsts” by our Vikings teams. So here goes.
Women’s Volleyball: It took two years, but the women’s volleyball has finally gotten into the win column and
then some. The girls swept the weekend home-stand against the Keyano Huskies 3-
1 and 3-0, winning their first match and second matches since entering the ACAC in
2010. They went on to spilt with Briercrest in week 3 to get their third win. Some other firsts involved with these wins include first back to back wins, first win during
the season opener, first sweep of a home-stand, and their first 3-0 win.
A few other tidbits. In the season opener, the girls set a new match high for women’s
volleyball with 45 kills as a team. There were 3 girls in double digits for kills, also a
first. And rookie outside hitter Kerri Alcorn set a Vikings record in her debut with
23 digs.
Men’s Volleyball: After defeating Concordia 3-0, 2-0 and 3-1 in exhibition play, Augustana men’s volleyball
has now defeated an ACAC opponent in men’s volleyball in double digits. The Vi-
kings have defeated the Thunder in all four regular season meetings and eight exhibi-
tion matches, including the final of our home tournament last year. If you take into
account the time in the ACAL, Augustana’s all-time record against Concordia in
men’s volleyball is 15-0.
Women’s Basketball: The women’s team is off to their fastest start ever. After going undefeated in exhibition
play, they have now retained that unbeaten streak through the first half. In several
games they have absolutely decimated teams, including their last win against N.A.I.T.
here at Augustana. This is the first time they have gone undefeated this long under
coach Shenton and the first time since 2003 when they went 24-0 during the regular
season. As one might imagine, this has landed the Vikings 1st in the conference and a
national ranking of 4th in the CCAA.
For those still unaware, the women’s team is hosting the 2012/2013 ACAC Champion-
ships. This will not only be a great opportunity for coach Shenton’s squad to make a legitimate run at the championship, but also an opportunity to show off our wom-
en’s program, our athletic program and our institution to the rest of the ACAC.
Men’s Basketball: The guys have continued their improved play from a few years ago. Hoping to carry the
momentum from making playoffs last year into this season, the Vikings men’s basket-
ball team have done just that, finishing 5-4 for the first semester and making a brief
appearance in the national rankings at 11th. This is the best start to a season the Vi-
kings have had under coach Drabiuk and it has them ranked 6th heading into the se-
cond half.
Men’s Hockey: The hockey team had its first series with the team from main campus this September.
The result wasn’t ideal, a pair of multi-goal defeats, but they were able to hold their
own for 120 minutes, not a bad result against a program that has won multiple CIS
championships. The Vikings are ranked 2nd in the league and will continue their title
defense after Christmas. That’s it for the first half folks. Good luck on exams, enjoy the time at home, have a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
