What is this project about?
‣ We are building the first modern private radiotherapy center of Vâlcea and other 5 districts
‣ We will deliver the most up to date radiotherapy
to the patients in the region
‣ We will build a center that will be considered a
landmark for radiotherapy in România

Background of Oncology in Romania
‣ According to the database of the National Society for
Medical Oncology, in 2012 we have in Romania ≈ 300 oncology doctors. Also according to the Health Ministry of Romania in Jan 2012 we had more than
600.000 cancer patients. This means we have a ration of 1 doctor to 2000 patients
‣ According to the official medical records in the district of Valcea there are more than 3900 cancer patients.
In the Valcea district there are only 5 doctors for medical oncology and no specialist for radiotherapy

Background of Oncology in Romania
‣ Currently we have 3 PET/CT centers
but only 2 are operational daily
‣ We have 30 radiotherapy stations
witch use 59 radiotherapy machines. Out of 30 stations ≈ 11 are operational for daily clinical use

Background of Oncology in Romania
‣ In the district of Vâlcea there is no radiotherapy center
‣ Out of the daily radiation delivered,
more than 80% is delivered with cobalt machines, 18,4% with old linac’s
and only 1,6% with modern linac’s
(only 1 machine)

What is our motivation? What is the need?
‣ According to the recommendation of the European Union 1 modern radiotherapy station is needed to 300.000 inhabitants, this means that we need 70 modern radiotherapy centers in Romania
‣ According also to European Union standards 60-70% cancer patients require radiotherapy for treatment
‣ Statistically 1 out of 3 Romanians (≈ 7 mil) will get a malign tumor in the
upcoming 10 years (European Cancer Observatory)

What is our motivation? What is the need?
‣ Romania has today more cancer patients than Germany witch has a
population 4 times larger than Romania
‣ The vision of the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology for 2020 is:
“Every cancer patient in Europe will have access to state of the art radiation therapy, as part of a multidisciplinary approach where treatment
is individualized for the specific patient’s cancer, taking account of the
patient’s personal circumstances”.

The Vision and the Objectives of this Project
‣ to establish the most modern radiotherapy center,
‣ a Romanian health care Campus
for Oncology
‣ to facilitate access of Romanian
patients to high quality medical services
‣ Special focus on radiation
treatments following long term aspects like:
- Sustainability in health sector- Transparency for total center
management (Following western
guidelines and rules)- Very low side effects for patients

Description of the Project‣ The first radiotherapy private center in Romania with a mixed team of
doctors. The treatments that will be applied here will be based on the experience of the doctors, from Germany

Modern Radiotherapy(IMRT, IGRT, VMAT)‣ Modern radiotherapy can
increase the survival rate of more than 5 years from 30% up to 85% based on the condition of the patient and the type of
irradiation. Also compared to the
conventional 2D irradiation the side effects of modern
radiotherapy are considerable lower.
‣ We want to deliver radiotherapy in accordance to the very best techniques available world wide

Modern Radiotherapy(IMRT, IGRT, VMAT)‣ Modern radiotherapy consists in
techniques such as 3D Irradiation, IMRT, IGRT and VMAT
‣ In Romania 80% of the daily irradiations are done with
inferior and outdated techniques such as 2D irradiation, and only 20% are 3D irradiation.
IMRT, IGRT and VMAT are not yet available in Romania
