About the USTA Pro Circuit The USTA Pro Circuit celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2009, marking three decades as the gateway through the professional ranks. Over the years and continuing through today, the USTA Pro Circuit has provided a welcoming environment for producing the next generations of American tennis players and champions, all while showcasing the game to new players and fans at the local level.
The USTA launched its Pro Circuit 30 years ago to provide players with the opportunity to gain the professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tours. It has since grown to become the most comprehensive developmental tennis circuit in the world, consisting annually of more than 90 tournaments and more than $3 million in prize money. The expanded schedule gives American players more competitive opportunities in the United States, thus making it easier and more affordable to earn a pro ranking.
USTA Pro Circuit – Men’s EventsThere are two types of men’s events on the USTA Pro Circuit: Futures and Challengers. Each Event has 32 players in the main singles draw and 16 teams competing in doubles.
Futures are professional tournaments offering $10,000 to $15,000 in prize money and typically serve as the proving ground for top-ranked juniors, college players and pros at the beginning of their careers. Players competing in the Futures generally have an ATP Entry Ranking between No. 150 and No. 900 in the world. The singles qualifying draw is 64 or 128 for the $10,000 events, and 64 for the $15,000 events. Players must reach the round of 16 of the main draw to earn a ranking point.
Challengers offer $50,000 to $75,000 in prize money, with one $100,000 event on the current schedule. These tournaments serve as a bridge between the Futures and the ATP, and enable players to earn more points per round than they do in the Futures events. In fact, a player can earn a Top 100 ranking by playing solely in Challengers. The qualifying draw size is 32 players.
USTA Pro Circuit – Women’s EventsWomen’s events on the USTA Pro Circuit consist of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $75,000 tournaments. Each event has 32 players in the main singles draw and 16 teams competing in doubles.
The $10,000 tournaments are entry-level events and give young players the opportunity to earn their fi rst ranking points. The women who compete are usually juniors or college players, and players who may be as high as Nos. 250 to 300 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings. The competition an the ranking points increase in the $25,000 tournaments- the level at which a player can best determine whether her game is good enough to pursue a career as a touring pro. Indeed, the non-American champions in these tournaments have often been the No. 1 players in their own countries.
The caliber of player at the premium-level events, the $50,000 and $75,000 tournaments, is close to that of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. They feature women ranked as high as No. 40.
The singles qualifying draw is 64 or 128 for the $10,000 events, 32 or 64 for the $25,000 events and 32 players for the $50,000 and $75,000 events.
