VOCABULARY

Progressive Movement: movement that wanted to improve working conditions and create laws to regulate businesses.

Muckraker: reporter/writer who exposed corruption.

Knights of Labor: a union formed in 1869 made up of skilled and unskilled workers.

Lockout: when workers are could not enter a plant.

VOCABULARY

American Federation of Labor: formed in 1886 by Samuel Gompers-had skilled workers only.

Homestead Strike: 1892 union strike against steel plant in Pennsylvania.

Yellow dog contract: written agreement not to join a union.

Blacklist: list of workers who were union members.

VOCABULARY

Suffrage: the right to vote. 18th Amendment: prohibited the

manufacture, sale, and transport of liquor (1919). It was enforced by the Volstead Act.

Temperance Movement: led by American religious groups opposed to the manufacture and consumption of alcohol.

19th Amendment: women gained the right to vote in 1920.

WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE

Increased educational opportunities

Attained voting rights: Women gained the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment; Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked for women’s suffrage.

TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT

Composed of groups opposed to the making and consumption of alcohol. The rationale was that liquor caused poverty and social disorder.

Supported the 18th Amendment which prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages.
