Upper Magazine will never tell you what to wear. You may find that contradictory in a fashion magazine, but it isn't if you consider fashion a form of art and style never existing without "personal" coming before it. Art is subjective: there is no way to objectively judge art as good or bad. Therefore, fashion is also subjective, and from the broad, broad base of "fashion" and all that inspires it across space and time should you glean elements that fit your personal style. "Style" that can be universally agreed upon does not exist, and no one can tell you whether or not you have style: not me, not Vogue, not your mother, not popular culture, not society. To that effect, there will never be a shopping section in the magazine, or a trends section, or a style guide, or street style. I ask you as a reader to do two things when you look at this magazine: appreciate the editorials as art, and consider fashion presented in the magazine with a discerning eye; you can respect the creative styling of an editorial and simultaneously understand that it does not fit your personal taste, and that's okay. Upper is the celebration of many local and independent voices in the Kentucky area combined to showcase local fashion as the art that it is. Enjoy it aesthetically, consider it critically, take it for what it is.

“Maui Crane Designs Presents”, a weekly fashion and arts extravaganza, is like nothing Lexington has ever seen. Described as, “A place where every Wednesday you can come and celebrate art, music and fashion and all its glory. Where we can celebrate our creative freedom and each others talents,” “Maui Crane Designs Presents,” held at Trust on an almost-weekly basis is the latest hot-spot for Lexington’s blooming fashion talent. Fashionistas, hipsters, and a curious crowd alike can enjoy drink specials, live music, and stimulating fashion entertainment, while participating themselves. Party-goers are encouraged to dress according to a prescribed theme. Past themes have included, “Hot Rods and Hellcats,” “Let Them Eat Cake,” and “Once Upon a Dream.” Next Wednesday’s event? “Man or the Machine.”

For all women with textured hair, this event is headed your way. The second event in Lexington hosted by Hair Matters--a collective with the goal to

provide an enviornment for women of all ethnicities to embrace their natural hair--aims to expand women’s knowledge on how to take proper care of their naturally curly and textured hair. Experts that will present at the seminar include Kimi Michelle of Kimi Michelle, Inc., Katherine Van Hook of Macy’s Premiere Salon, and Ladosha Lynn Wright, founder of The Reverence Design Team and The Beauty Group.

Each April, hundreds upon hundreds of crazily dressed individuals converge on Lexington’s distillery district to dance the night away…while also enjoying live music, DJs, art installations, fashion shows, and lots and lots of crazy costumes. Started in Lexington in 1969 by the University of Kentucky College of Design, the event has grown each year. All proceeds from the event go to several different charities throughout the region. This year, UK College of Design students will be working in conjunction with a clothing designer from the Lexington Fashion Collaborative, one of this year’s designated charities. to create a runway show of avant-garde designs made from only chipboard, muslin, and tyvek. Get ready for industrial fashion at it’s best.
