SHOOTING FOR SIX: The Dodgers, who enter 2018 as the defending
National League champions and have won five consecutive NL West
division titles, open their 61st season since moving to Los Angeles today
with the first of four games against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger
Stadium. All season long, the Dodgers will be celebrating the
anniversary of their 60th year in Los Angeles, while also honoring the
30th anniversary of the club’s 1988 World Championship.
The Dodgers are 33-27 on Opening Day since 1958 and have
been victorious in their season-opening game seven years in a
row, and in nine of the past 10 seasons. Los Angeles last lost
on Opening Day April 5, 2010 at PIT.
MLB, Longest Active Win Streaks on Opening Day
Los Angeles Dodgers 7
Baltimore Orioles 7
Detroit Tigers 6
* A sixth consecutive division title, would put the Dodgers in some
lofty company:
MLB, Most Consecutive Seasons Winning Division - All-Time
(since 1969) Atlanta Braves 14 (1991-2005)
New York Yankees 9 (1998-2006)
Los Angeles Dodgers 5 (2013-2017, ACTIVE)
Philadelphia Phillies 5 (2007-2011)
Cleveland Indians 5 (1995-1999)
Oakland Athletics 5 (1971-1975) SOURCE: STATS, LLC
Today’s game is the 12th time in L.A. Dodger history that the
club will open the season against the Giants, and the ninth time
at Dodger Stadium (last: 2013). Included in those previous 11
games is the first game in Los Angeles Dodger history on April
15, 1958, the first game of Tommy Lasorda’s managerial
career on April 7, 1977 and the first game of the 1988 season.
THE GREAT EIGHT: Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton
Kershaw will make his eighth consecutive Opening Day start for the
Dodgers this afternoon, having posted a 5-0 record and one of the lowest
all-time ERAs in season-openers:
MLB, Lowest Career ERA on Opening Day – Since 1920
(minimum 5 starts; entering 2018 season) Rick Mahler 0.92 (5 starts)
Clayton Kershaw 0.99 (5/45.2)
Bob Feller 1.21
According to STATS, LLC, Kershaw owns the lowest
Opening Day ERA all-time among pitchers who have made six
or more starts in the season’s lid lifter.
In franchise history, Kershaw’s eight Opening Day starts are
now the most all-time, one more than Don Sutton, who started
seven consecutive season-openers from 1972-78 and Don
Drysdale, who also started seven openers, though not
consecutively (1958-61, ’63, ’65 and ’69). With a win, he
would take sole possession of the most Opening Day victories
in franchise history with six. He and Drysdale are currently tied
with five Opening Day victories.
Last season, Kershaw went 18-4, led the league in wins and
won his fifth NL ERA crown (also: 2011-14) while also
ranking among the big league leaders in strikeout-to-walk ratio
(6.73, 3rd) and opponents’ OBP (.246, 2nd). He also ranked
among the best in the senior circuit in winning percentage
(.818, 2nd), WHIP (0.95, 2nd), opponents’ OPS (.604, 3rd),
opponents’ batting average (.212, 4th), opponents’ SLG (.357,
5th), strikeout per nine innings (10.39, 5th) and strikeouts (202,
8th). Incredibly, Kershaw fired 21.1 scoreless Cactus League
innings during Spring Training this year.
GIANT KILLER: In 41 career games (40 starts) against the Giants,
Kershaw has gone 22-9 with a 1.60 ERA (53 ER/297.1 IP) and has held
hitters to a .192/.226/.270 slashline, while striking out 307 batters
against just 44 walks. According to Stats LLC., Kershaw’s ERA against
San Francisco is the second lowest among NL pitchers in the live-ball
era (since 1920) versus any opponent (min. 20 starts), behind Sandy
Koufax, who posted a career 1.44 ERA against the Mets.
A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers posted a 104-58 record in 2017,
becoming the first team in NL West history to win the division in five
consecutive seasons. The team earned a World Series berth after
defeating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS, 4 games to 1, and finished the
season with their first National League Pennant since 1988.
The Dodgers posted the seventh 100-win season in franchise
history (third in Los Angeles history) and first since 1974 (102-
60). The Dodgers won 90+ games for the fifth consecutive
season, a feat that had only previously been accomplished once
in franchise history, 1951-56 (6).
Los Angeles finished with the best record in the Majors for the
first time since 1974 and the National League’s best record for
the first time since 2009. The Dodgers set a Los Angeles record
for victories with 104 (104-58), tying for the second most in
franchise history (also: 1942, 104-50).
THE ROSTER: Several Dodgers are due congratulations for making
their first active Opening Day rosters, as Scott Alexander, Cody
Bellinger, J.T. Chargois, Kyle Farmer, Wilmer Font and Chris
Taylor will take part in their very first Major League Opening Days.
Of the 25 active players who appear on the Dodgers’ Opening
Day active roster, 22 contributed to the club’s 2017 National
League pennant-winning squad.
Today, the Dodgers placed three players on the 10-day DL,
retroactive to March 26 (Yimi Garcia, Tom Koehler and
Justin Turner), who join Julio Urías (60-day DL) in
comprising the club’s four-man DL.
Of the 25 players on the Dodger roster, eight countries are
represented (Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Japan,
Korea, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela).
FEARLESS LEADER: Dodger skipper Dave Roberts is entering his
third season as the Dodger manager, following a 2016 campaign in which
he was named National League Manager of the Year and a 2017 season
in which he piloted the Dodgers to their first NL pennant in 29 years.
Through his first two full seasons as a Major League manager,
Roberts has recorded 195 wins, which according to STATS
LLC., ranks fifth most all-time. The native of Japan also joined
Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda (1977-78) and Joe Torre
(2008-09) as the only L.A. managers to lead the club to the
Postseason in their first two years with the team.
Roberts’ 15 Postseason victories are the second most by a big
league manager in baseball history after his first two seasons,
one shy of Mike Matheny (2012-13).
The Dodger coaching staff has several new faces in 2018 as
bullpen coach Mark Prior, assistant hitting coaches Brant
Brown and Luis Ortiz and game planning and
communications coach Danny Lehmann join the club in new
roles. The remaining staff consists of pitching coach Rick
Honeycutt (13th season); bench coach Bob Geren (3rd season);
hitting coach Turner Ward (3rd season); first base coach
George Lombard (3rd season) and third base coach Chris
Woodward (3rd season).
ALL YEAR LONG HE LIT THE FIRE: The Dodgers will kick-off
their 60th anniversary in Los Angeles today with a special salute to the
30th anniversary of the 1988 World Champions and a ceremonial first
pitch by Kirk Gibson. Gibson will be available to the media at 2:00
p.m. in the interview room to discuss the 1988 club as well as the
Dodgers’ partnership with the Kirk Gibson Foundation to raise money
and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease. Throughout the season, the
Dodgers will donate the proceeds from the new, sold out Kirk Gibson
Seat 88 in the Right Field Pavilion to the Kirk Gibson Foundation, and
on Opening Day, the team and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation
will also contribute the proceeds from the LADF 50-50 Raffle. Gibson
was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015.
