Coastal Cultivation

The seawater greenhouse is a unique technology that allows fresh water to be attained from sea water with the help of natural proc-esses, a simple construction, and low cost energy. It produces a surplus of freshwater that can be used domestically. Grey water from the houses is filtered by irrigating plants and runs off back into the canal. The research centre uses seawater to grow algae in offshore experimental pools.

The main canal uses seawater to irrigate halophyte plants and is also a means of transportation. The seawater is pumped and then circu-lated by canals of different levels.

Mariculture Research Quarter

The concept is to create overlapping layers shapes developing an urban fabric in Qantab that carries out the theme of Mariculture. The first layer consists of the Research centre spaced out from the sea towards the beach. Contrary to it the residential layer spaced out from the valley towards the sea. This collision of layers creates a new connective space that allows a smooth transition between the two spaces. The leading spatial layer consists mainly of the research centre fragmented along a deck leading towards the sea.

This fragmentation of building creates semi open space that act as pools for experimentation of a specific type of marine cultiva-tion in their natural environment. The secondary layer which under lays the research centre, is the housing quarter. The spaces shaped with four housing typologies: row houses, semi-detached houses, townhouse blocks, and courtyard blocks. The final layer, which is formed with the overlapping of the research and hous-ing layer, is the open public space layer. Here the visitor’s centre, library, souq, shops and administration shape the space of the big square created in the middle surrounded by the fragmented buildings.

Sustainable Research Quarter: Inter-tidal Zones

Inter-tidal zones are found on sandy beaches, rocky shores, estuaries, mangrove swamps, coral reefs, etc. Some of there regions are more productive than others due to factors such as air and wave actions. These areas include environments and organisms that are washed away by tides almost everyday, therefore these organ-isms have to adapt to constant changes in moisture, temperature, turbulence and salinity.

As Qantab beach includes both the sandy beach and a small bay formed by mountains, it is most suitable to locate a research centre which investigates inter-tidal zones in that area. Where researchers can carry out on site experiments and have direct results and observa-tions.

In addition this research quarter will create awareness that will focus of the conservation of a specific natural environment. The project encompasses a variety of spaces that will attain suitable aspects in terms of spaces that will encourage for further interaction with the environment.

Throughout the coastline land is being privatized. The serene beaches of Muscat are transformed into luxury hotels of private apartments. These large development projects pose a threat to the marine life.

In order to protect these, the research centre would work towards studying these reefs and further enhance it with additional artificial reefs. A deck will be built at the end of the valley. Leisure and research take place together here and there is a vibrant interaction between the researchers, visitors and local dwellers. A linear sequence of spaces in the valley, lead to the beach and deck over the water.

The urban concept is to create a sequence if spaces across the valley. The research centre has been distrib-uted in each of these spaces. The spaces in the sequence grow gradually as it approaches the beach. The first part is the research school, neighbourhood park and the school. This sequence serves as the gateway to the valley. The second space contains the research centre, souq and mosque. This space has the most interaction with the neighbourhood. The third space is located on the deck and consists of the visitors centre, research centre and restaurants and a souq to create a vibrant atmosphere on the deck.

Sustainable Resarch Quarter: Intergrated Farming

The quarter consists of two grounds of farming, where one sits on land and the other one on the sea. To con-nect the two sides, the neighbourhood is designed in such a way that it is easy to approach the two sides by foot as well as by car. The main stretch is a very public street that consists of mix use housing provided with local amenities and a market space where the farming products will be vended.

The research quarter consists of different hierarchy of spaces starting from the public square moving towards the privatized area. These spaces can be experienced by taking the inner route walkway that can be easily accessed from the research centres as well as the main public stretch.

Statistics show that Oman is likely to exhaust its oil sup-ply in the next twenty years. Therefore, it is important to plan the possible source of income for the future as soon as possible to keep the economy stable. If we look back to Oman’s history, the main source of the income used to be trough trading with the neighbouring coun-tries. Farming and fishing used to be another source of income with the country itself.

My aim is to bring back this tradition and spread the knowledge of farming and fishing through this research quarter. After combining the two features, an idea of integrated farming has been applied to this quarter so that the community benefits from the knowledge and awareness provided by both fields that in turn benefit from each other due to the exchange of specific ele-ments produced.
