In the News… Why Now?• Graduation Rates Fall at One-Third of 4-Year

Colleges.• College Costs Are Up Again• Some states say the money they give to

colleges and universities should be linked to results.

International/National Scene• In the 2006 Programme for International Student Assessment

(PISA) comparison, American students ranked 21st out of 30 in science literacy among students from developed countries, and 25th out of 30 in math literacy.

• On the2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) math tests, 4th graders showed no signs of progress for the first time in many years, and 8th graders tallied only modest evidence of progress. We are not advancing as we must.

Lumina’s Big Goal• To increase the proportion of Americans with

high-quality degrees and credentials to 60 percent by the year 2025.

• 55 percent of Indiana’s jobs will require postsecondary education by 2018.

• Between now and 2018, Indiana will need to fill about 930,000 vacancies resulting from job creation, worker retirements and other factors. Of these job vacancies, 506,000 will require postsecondary credentials, while only 424,000 are expected to be filled by high school graduates or dropouts.
