Open School

What is the

Open School?

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Open School exists to advance quality improvement and patient safety competencies in the next generation of health professionals. Launched in 2008, the Open School includes a growing catalog of 20 online courses that teach the foundations of improvement, safety, system design, and leadership. More than 150,000 students, faculty, and professionals are part of the Open School’s interprofessional community, which includes Chapters in more than 50 countries around the world. The IHI Open School courses are free for all students, residents, and faculty, and available to health care professionals for a modest annual fee.

What The Open School Offers You

Students and ResidentsMore then 150,000 students and residents are a part of the Open School — and thousands more join every month. Students and residents have free access to the growing catalog of online courses created by world-renowned faculty. Learners earn the Basic Certificate — a nice addition to any professional resume — upon complet-ing the 16 fundamental courses in the catalog.

Those same students and residents connect in more than 580 Open School Chap-ters around the globe, adding a local component to the educational network. Chap-ters, which range in size from 10 students to 1,000, work together on Open School courses, local improvement projects, and curriculum reform.

Students and residents can also sharpen their improvement skills with the IHI Open School Quality Improvement Practicum — an interactive course designed to walk students through the process of conducting a quality improvement project to improve patient care.

“When I became involved with the IHI Open School, I found a source of thoughtful and ener-gized students and faculty who not only wanted to make a difference, but knew how. I learned so much about how to make things better here, there, and anywhere.”Lakshman Swamy, IHI Open School Chapter Leader, Wright State University

“I’m always wondering where to put our limited resources and there are very few things that are going to get you a return on investment like working with IHI and the IHI Open School.”Mark Webster, CEO Claxton-Hepburn Medical CenterOgdensburg, NY

Faculty University faculty around the world use the Open School because it provides high-quality educational resources. Along with the online courses, the Open School website is filled with teaching resources including videos, case studies, articles, and a network of other educators.

Within the past two years, more than 200 universities have integrated the online courses into their formal curricula — some as a graduation requirement. Contact IHI today to learn how to integrate the Open School into your curriculum.

ProfessionalsProfessionals looking to gain improvement skills, and organizations looking to train staff and build improvement capability, can purchase annual subscriptions to the IHI Open School online courses. More than 400 organizations have integrated the courses into their training programs and many have already started to see a dramatic shift in their culture.

Nurses, physicians, and pharmacists in the United States can earn more than 25 con-tact hours by taking the Open School courses. The courses are also approved by the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) to provide CPHQ CE credit.

“The students have found the Open School work to be highly engaging and helpful. I feel the Open School modules provide a much more practical and realistic application of the quality improvement and patient safety material than what I have found in textbooks.”Marsha Chan, Health Administration Professor, California State University
