Holy Week

What is Holy Week?

Easter is the Christian annual commemoration of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. For this reason, it is a period of intense liturgical activity within the different Christian confessions. It begins on Palm Sunday and ends on the Resurrection Sunday.

Holy Week in La Palma

Palm Sunday: Christ of the Forgiveness.

Holy Tuesday: Le Captif. Holy Thursday: Our Father Jesus

Nazareno. Holy Friday: Holy Burial.

Palm Sunday On Palm Sunday the brotherhood

called the Christ of forgiveness does its street parade (procession). The penitents dress as “Nazarenos” in white and black for the Christ and in Bordeaux and black for the Virgin. Behind them there are the images of Jesus and Virgin on their “pasos”.

Holy Tuesday On Holy Tuesday the brotherhood of

Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo, whose images are our Lady of the tears and the Captive Christ, does its “procession”. The penitents dress as “Nazarenos” in Blue and Garnet for both images, the only distinction is the colour of their belt.

Holy Thursday

On the Holy Thursday the brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazareno does its procession vey late at night. It’s “la madrugá”. In this one the penitents dress in tunics and hoods dwelt in the waist with a belt of esparto. The virgin who accompanies the Christ is called the Virgin of Help.

Holy Friday

On Good Friday the brotherhood of the Holy Burial accompanied of the Virgin of Pain does its procession. Its Nazarenos are dressed in white and black. The penitents wear different belts. those of Christ are black and those of the Virgin are white and black.

TRADITIONS

Balls made of wax

In our village it is very common for children to make balls of wax when they are watching the processions. Since Nazarenos carry candles, children ask them to pour wax on a silver paper.

Torrijas

The “torrijas” is a typical dish of the Holy Week in Spain. It consists of a slice of bread (mostly of several days) that is soaked in milk or wine. Then it is muffled in egg, fried with oil in a frying pan and finally, soaked in honey.
