Reading Skills

Topic and Main Idea

Reading Strategy

Recognizing the topic and identifying the main idea of a reading passage, essay or newspaper article are two of the most important reading skills you will learn. If you can identify the topic of the reading, it will be much easier to understand the other information in the reading passage.

The topic is the general subject of a reading passage. Topics are expressed in words or phrases, never in sentences. A title of a reading passage may tell you the topic. The main idea of a passage sometimes is easy to find. But in some readings, the main idea is not obvious; instead, the main idea is implied. That is, the writer provides us with enough details and information that we can infer or understand what the main idea is without having stated in a complete sentence.

Group Activities:

Discuss the main ideas of each paragraph in Passage Ⅱ

Activity 1

Activity 2

Write down the summary of this passage according to those main ideas.

Summary

When a highway was put through the land where the dairy was located, Stew Leonard decided to change his family business. After a careful investigation, he created a factory-outlet dairy store- Disneyland Dairy Store to attract children and their mothers. He also produced more kinds of milk products, and enlarged his building into “the world’s largest dairy store.” Finally, based on his own business principle, he succeeded.
