The objective of this starter is:

• Visualise and sketch 2-D shapes in different orientations.

• Describe what happens and use the shapes to explain why.

Imagine a rectangular sheet of paper.

Cut along the diagonal to make two triangles.

Place the diagonals together in a different way.

What shape is formed?

A kite

Imagine two equilateral triangles.

What shape is formed?

Place them together, edge to edge.

A rhombus

Does it matter on what edge to place the equilateral triangle? No

Add a third equilateral triangle. What shape is formed?

An isosceles trapezium

Does it matter on what edge to place the third equilateral triangle? No

Add a fourth equilateral triangle?

A parallelogram

Does it matter on what edge to place the equilateral triangle?

What shape is formed?

Yes

What other shape can be formed?

Add a fourth equilateral triangle?

An equilateral triangle

What shape is formed?
