Seeland and the woodcockTHE LITTLE PRINCE OF BIRDS

The woodcock has adorned Seeland International’s logo since the company was founded in 1976.

Seeland International is a Danish company, and in Denmark the woodcock is considered to be the noblest game bird in the country. The bird’s silent behaviour and distinctive flight makes it hard to hit – but success is its own reward. The woodcock is the only bird that, once brought down, must be carried by the legs, since the head and neck are fragile and there is a risk of detaching them from the body. Respect for the little prince of birds prohibits this occurring.

In Denmark, the woodcock ranks highest at the game parade – higher even than the roebuck as a coveted centrepiece. Even if there is a handsome buck at the game parade, the wood-cock is still placed first, or on the buck’s neck. The woodcock is also special in that it is the only Danish bird to have its own tro-phy. The outer primary feathers of the woodcock are called pin feathers and are very sharp-tipped. They were formerly used by artists, but are now considered to be a coveted trophy from the bird.

Many Danish shooters wrongly believe that they have to kiss the first woodcock they catch on its backside! But this is not a Danish shooting tradition. Rather, the master of the shoot hands over the woodcock to the shooter in his shooting hat. The shooter kisses the woodcock on the breast to honour the bird. Even during preparation of the bird, tradition dictates that it must be shown respect. The whole bird is fried, with head, neck and beak. The head is folded backwards and the beak placed between the thigh and body.

Clothing yourself properly for shooting is a science. Of course, it is easy to dress up warm when the cold bites, but it is not sufficient just to insulate yourself in

an ultra warm shell jacket, because as soon as you are shooting actively you start per-spiring, and when you then take a break or come to a stop while stalking the moisture produced by your body cools down and you begin to freeze. This is the reason you need to use the layering principle.

HATS, GLOVES AND BOOTSIf you stick to the layering principle, you will be well-dressed for the shoot. And remember too, much bodily heat is lost via the head, hands and feet. These are the parts of the body that cool down fastest, and are therefore also the parts which most quickly affect the pleasure of the shoot and perhaps also its final out-come. So don your boots, pull your hat well down over your head and have a look at Seeland’s wide selection of head attire further on in the catalogue.

Your innermost layer (undergarments) must be moisture-transporting, soft and comfortable. Avoid cotton which retains moisture and instead go for wool or moisture-transporting polye-ster, as used for example in Seeland’s Hester underwear. Your midlayer must retain heat around your body. Orange the safe choice

In New York state, more than 80% of shooters shoot in orange, even though this is not legally required there, as it is in some American states. In general, American shooters do not choose to shoot in orange because of the legislation, but primarily from a desire to be visible to their fellow shooters. Hoofed animals are not sensitive to the same wavelengths of light as humans are, and they cannot differentiate between orange, green and brown.

If you are shooting for hoofed game, you are equally well camou-flaged in orange blaze as in traditional green camouflage, but the benefit of the orange colour is that it makes you far more visible to other shooters. Figures from the USA show that shooting in orange blaze offers shooters seven times less risk of being hit by an acciden-tal shot than shooters in traditional camouflage.

For quarry at close rangeSomewhere between 30 and 40% of all shooting clothes now sold in Denmark are camouflage garments. 25 years ago, traditional green was predominant, so this represents a huge change. While, on a European scale, Denmark is at the high end of camouflage use, we are still far behind the USA, where as many as 80% of shooters go out in either pixellated camo or photo-realistic forest terrain camo. Seeland uses camouflage patterns developed by the market-leading camouflage specialist Realtree®. The first camouflage patterns were designed for military use, and Realtree® has been a trailblazer in the development of camouflage for shooting. Realtree® introduced true-to-life patterns which far exceeded military camouflage in its reproduction of the shooters’ environment. Military camouflage was designed to allow soldiers to blend in with their surroundings at sev-eral hundred metres distance from the enemy, while the shooters need is exactly the opposite. The shooter needs to be as close to the quarry as possible, without being spotted. Realtree® camouflage also has the property of concealing at both near and far distances. “We are currently using six different types of Realtree® camouflage in the Seeland collection. Realtree® is a technical camouflage with lots of depth and vivid 3D-effects for all aspects of shooting. Seeland’s latest camo type from Realtree® is Max-4 in 3D, which is ideal for shooting waterfowl in open terrain and is therefore used in our large wetland range. Max-4 consists of many different realistic elements such as reeds, bulrushes, stems and dead branches. This deep 3D-camouflage makes you practically invisible to ducks and other birds when in the reeds for example.

SEELAND 2015 / FOOTWEAR

VULCANISATIONSeeland boots are vulcanised to ensure that they are completely waterproof. The vulcanisation pro-cess melts into a single piece the di erent layers of natural rubber used in the boot. Vulcanisation takes place in a kiln, where the boot is heated to a tem-perature of 120-130°C for about an hour.One of the reasons for using multi-layered natu-ral rubber is to reinforce the boot in those places where the wear will be greatest.

TESTING FOR LEAKSSeeland rubber boots are tested to make sure that they are waterproof. When tested, the boot is low-ered into water, and air is then channelled into it. If air bubbles appear in the water, the rubber boot has a leak and it will be rejected. Only Seeland applies this unique test, and it is your guarantee of unri-valled quality. Remember to care for your rubber boots. Rinse them in water, dry them and treat them with Seeland Rubber Footwear Care. This way, they will last you longer, and the rubber will stay supple.

BINOCULARS

Choosing the right binoculars can be a difficult and confusing task. To help you make the right decision we have made this small guide and glossary.

What does 7x42 mean? For all binoculars, two numbers separated by an x are spec-ified. They define the magnification of the binoculars and the objective lens diameter in millimetres, respectively. A magnification of less than 7 times gives the binoculars a wide field of view and good depth of field, but not as much detail. A magnification of 7 or more gives a more detailed picture, but at the cost of a narrower field of view and less depth of field. Good all-round binoculars have a magnifica-tion of between 7 and 10 times. The objective lens diameter determines the amount of light that enters the binoculars. In daylight, an objective lens diameter of up to 42mm is suf-ficient. A large diameter (+42mm) allows a lot of light in and is a good choice for poor light conditions.

Choosing a pair of binocularsFor shooting, an objective lens diameter of at least 35mm is recommended. If you need superior performance at dusk or in dark conditions, the objective lens diameter needs to be larger.

Upland and extreme shootingThe best choice here is 7x, 8x or 10x magnification and an objective lens diameter of 35-45mm.

Deer shootingThe choice here depends on whether you will be in the woods or in open country. But, an 8X42 pair would make a good all-round choice, suitable for a variety of conditions.

RiflescopesMany riflescopes are available with variable magnifica-tions, enabling you to find the magnification best suited to the terrain, distance and light conditions in question. As described above, it comes down to weighing the different features such as aperture, magnification and field of view against each other.

Glossary

Coating: A microscopic chemical is applied to the lenses in order to im-prove light transmission and mini-mise reflection. The best coating is full multi-coating.

Magnification: 10x magnification means that an object appears 10 times larger when seen through the binoculars.

Objective lens diameter: The dia-meter in millimetres of the objec-tive lens.

Field of view: Indicates in metres the breadth of the landscape visi-ble in the binoculars at a distance of 1,000 m. In general, the higher the magnification, the narrower the field of view. Some manufacturers state the field of view in degrees, which can be converted to metres as follows: 1 degree = 17.50 meters so if the field of view is 8 degrees, that equals 140 metres (8 x 17.50).

Exit pupil: Designates how much light reaches the eye from the bi-noculars. An exit pupil of 2-3mm is sufficient in normal daylight. In low light conditions, it needs to be at least 5mm. The pupil of a per-son aged 30 or less will be able to expand to 7mm at most. The exit pupil is found by dividing the obje-ctive lens diameter by the magnifi-cation, e.g. 10 ÷ 42 = 4.2mm.

Twilight performance: Specifies the binoculars’ performance under poor light conditions. It is calcula-ted by multiplying the magnifica-tion by the objective lens diameter and finding the square root of the result and multiplying by 100. For 7x42 binoculars it is 175, and for 8x56 binoculars it is 212. This me-ans that you can see at 175 m with 7x42 binoculars and out to 212 m with 8x56 binoculars.
