MS Student Technology Use

Why is it SO important to them?

Post-millennial kids (Generation Z) develop their identity through social media and technology

“Adolescents have a heightened sense of "the imaginary audience"; this sense is a psychological state where one assumes others are looking and thinking about you at all times. Posting self-portraits online -- and most importantly, getting feedback -- confirms the idea of an imaginary audience” and has a direct effect on identity and self-esteem of adolescents.

15 applications that kids are using today

Apps to watch out for

Whisper: Allows you to post secrets anonymously and allows chatting with others users in the same geographic area. This is dangerous because strangers can connect with kids and make it seem like they care and understand.

Snapchat: VERY popular. Images or videos are shared for a limited time, after that time is up the image or video disappears. Dangerous because it gives the illusion of “no consequences.. because the image disappears” Have the talk about the fact that NOTHING disappears permanently, there is a way to retrieve them.

Vine: Allows kids to watch or post 6 second videos. May be dangerous because it can contain sexually explicit material, and shares the location of users

It’s time to have THE TALK (how to behave on Social Media)

I have a life so in my private life I have private things that I don’t have to share with other people especially my parents

I would like them to know that I am using technology the way that they want me to and I follow the rules that they set for me.

I don’t talk to people I don’t know
