UAE2 Mission Planning Meeting-GSFC June 16, 2004

• Mission Objectives:– Validation/comparison to column integrated in situ and

RS retrievals

– Mixed AEROSOL assessment (dust & fine mode fossil fuel)

– SSA and other dust properties vs other desert regions

– Validation for satellite RS retrievals (MODIS, MISR)

– Ocean color validation in a dust environment (SeaPRISM)

Measurement Plan

• Instrumentation-Approximately 12 to 15 cimels over Island, coastal and interior locations– Includes 1 oil Platform, 2 or 3 islands, 3 coastal Arab

Gulf sites, 4 desert interior sites, 2 mountain sites and 1 Arabian Sea site

– Collocation w/ MAARCO and SMART– Time period: from July 1- October 1.– Manned by Sorokine, Eck, Smirnov, Newcomb– Additional observations as required– Near Real time processing; http:aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov– Collocation w/MAARCO & SMART

• Solar Flux-Joel Schafer & Tom Eck– Pyranometers and PAR sensors at ~ 6 AERONET sites

– Logging 1 ob/min

– Near Real time Data available thru ‘demonstrat’ & website

• Thermal Radiometer (cimel)-Michel Legrand– Collocated w/ MAARCO

– Coarse particle characterization
