At the December ‘Legislative Breakfast with the Chamber’, we posed
a question to our panelist of economists to the effect of: “what insight can
you give us today that would encourage someone to go back to their office
and add one new employee before the end of the year.” The economists all
had differing perspectives that varied in length, but Harold Hamilton, owner
of Micro Controls Company, simply stated “if you have a need, and the
potential for revenue or added production exceeds the cost, hire a new
employee.”
It made perfect sense. The Chamber needed a full time sales person to come in and make
connections with existing members and promote the Chamber as a whole and encourage and
eventually sign up new members at a rate of double digits each month. Once the potential for
revenue versus cost was figured out in the middle of December, we set out a course of trying to
find the new employee. I figured it would take awhile to find the right person, with the right set
of skills, and the right personality to jump into the group here at the Chamber.
We couldn’t have been more lucky. We received many respondents
immediately, and I was amazed when one of the first respondents had
the perfect skill set to become out newest Director of Membership.
After the first interview to determine her personality, I was hooked, and
on December 27th, Shari Osterude started her first day on the job at the
Chamber.
Shari has more than 10 years of experience in sales, with a background in
small business, advertising and hospitality. She spent six years as a small
business owner in Wisconsin, operating a family run advertising agency.
Most recently she was employed by The Summit Group, Inc. a national
manager of premium limited service hotels. She was Director of Sales for two hotels in the
Twin Cities area, responsible for all sales efforts required to increase occupancy and maximize
revenue. She was actively involved with her local Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed the
opportunity it gave her to network within the community and keep informed about the business
community. She enjoys working with people and looks forward to helping businesses in the
North Metro with their professional development, relationship building and increased
representation in legislation.
Now that her first week, and the training, is under her belt Shari has been lining up
appointments one after another this week. If you know of anyone who should be a member,
be sure to call or email Shari with the information!

I saw a former Navy pilot being interviewed on TV last week. He had flown an F-4 Phantom for
many years, had fought over North Vietnam and was speaking of what he called “stall.”
A jet must be flown at a certain speed to insure proper internal combustion and adequate airflow
over the control surfaces of the wings. If flown too slowly, he explained, it goes into a “stall,”
where it loses power and quickly drops nose first into a downward spiral. An event which the
pilot acknowledged was a frightening occurrence. It had happened to him twice while engaged in
combat with slower enemy aircraft.
Although his discussion on the pull of gravity was not surprising, how he handled the situation was.
He did nothing. Ironically, as the aircraft corkscrewed downward, it picked up the necessary air
speed to allow the pilot to regain control. If one tried to fight stall by grabbing the control stick
nd working the rudders, a pilot could delay his aircraft from attaining the corrective airspeed, thus
allowing stall to continue longer than it normally would, perhaps fatally. He added they were strictly
trained to keep their hands at their sides until this increase in air speed occurred.
My first thought after the conclusion of this interview, was how closely the concept of “stall”
applied to our economy. I doubt there can be disagreement that it slowed, stalled and then went
into a tail spin. Or, that such was a frightening experience for many people. Where the similarities end however, is in what has
been done to correct it. Those who insisted that government must grab the controls to fight the stall have prevailed for a little
over two years. While those who equally insisted that this only delayed recovery, have seen their advice to do little or nothing,
mostly ignored.
Those who attended our December Legislative Breakfast were offered a fresh reminder that, even after the recent elections,
these opposing viewpoints are still being debated. And, the one which is successful in this debate will have an enormous impact
on the future of our Country. As in past Breakfast sessions, the panel discussion was well directed by the moderator and the
questions from our membership were polite but direct. The presentation definitely provided the proverbial food for thought,
which went well with an excellent breakfast.
Be certain to attend January’s session, when the new leaders of our State Legislature are expected to present their opinions on
what the remedy for our State’s economic “stall” should be.
