TUVALU COUNTRY

OUR CREDE IS “TUVALU FOR GOD” THIS IS ALL WE HAVE

• Total land area Tuvalu..24 km²/Manhattan 87.46 km²)• 4th smallest country (cf. Holy Sea/Monaco/Nauru)• Average elevation is 2 mtrs above sea level• Only highest building is Government Headquarters; 3

stories.• 757,000 km² sea locked in mid Pacific Ocean• 11,000 people living on nine coral atolls• Most Vulnerable in the WHOLE WORLD

Slide 1:Brief Intro about the country.

• Location: Pacific Ocean, North East of Australia

• 10,000 inhabitants, with 8km of roads, and only 1 hospital

• Former British colony until 1978

• The Tuvaluan language and English are the national languages

• The development partners contributed 25 per cent in grants in 2004 and 38 per cent in 2005, an increase of 13 per cent. Donor assistance increased during 2006 (28 per cent) and 2007 (32 per cent).

• A-allocation with 3.3.m Euros for focal/non-focal areas of community assistance; and B- allocation with will be provided to improve the water shortage problems and also waste management in the country

• From the 1995 Census, the literacy rate of 15-24 year old increased from 95 per cent in 1994 to 99 per cent IN 2002. These rates may not be very accurate. The 2004 HIES provides the latest literacy rates

About Tuvalu

• Tuvalu located in South Pacific Ocean. • Tuvalu consist of 9 atolls and islands.• Maximum altitude is only 3m.• Due to Global Warming, sea level rise up and

town may be sink under water soon.• On the other hand, Tuvalu has other

problems, such as increased population, and rapid economic development.

Effects of sea level rise in Tuvalu

• The lower height above sea level in Tuvalu. There are some areas already below the sea.

• If the global warming continue, Tuvalu will be sank under the sea.

• Now, dozens of citizens are migrate to New Zealand every year.

• The colors of sand are orange and white.

At this momentArea: 1 square kmPopulation: 5000 people

Due to increase population, people also live in lower dismal.

However, their home land invaded by sea water every moment.

What should we know?• We should know eco-system, such as “corals” create sand.• Sea carry and covered island with sand.

• To understand eco system, such as stated above.• Solve other problems, such as over population.• Then revive island against sea rise.

Stance of Tuvalu• Independence from assistance People in Tuvalu realized to stop waiting for

assistance from other countries and started to solve problems by own selves.

• Co-operate with Japan Use natural resource to recover island. Such as reproduce foraminifera.

Stance of Japan■To use experience and solve problem in Japan The 2/3 of land in Tuvalu made by “Foraminifera” . They cultivate “Foraminifera” and produce sand (=

land).

They research about; 1. What types of environment “Foraminifera” easy to

reproduce. 2. How current around island carry sand and cover the

island.

Research and Cultivation of “Foraminifera” is first trial in the world.

If Japan succeed this project, it will let to solve problem of sea rise all over the world.

Japan is also a country of island, so this experience will be effective to solve own problem.

Approach 1: Reproduce Foraminifera

①Cultivate Foraminifera by aquarium

②Put Foraminifera on mat, and lay it at seaside

Approach 2: Remote sensing

• Check “Remote Sensing” picture from satellite.• Then create map to see where and how many

Foraminifera = corals exist.

• Predict amount of annual productivity of Foraminifera.• Create new provision.

Prospect for the future

• Resolution of population problem• Natural Environmental Approach• Contribute to biotechnology• Each countries also use their results to

countermeasure of rising sea

Conclusion• Tuvalu is one of the most smallest countries in

the world.• However, because of our daily activities, their

island is faced to danger.• Researchers started to reconstruct Tuvalu by

using foraminifera.• We should think about rising sea issue.

•THANK YOU
