Partnership with IRENA

• CCI and RMI-CWR are pleased to join the IRENA SIDS Lighthouse Initiative

• Together, we will contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the initiative including:– Developing and implementing a structured approach to island

electricity sector transitions to high percentage of renewable energy through a set of guidelines, tools and support mechanisms;

– Accelerating renewable energy transitions through identification of needs and gaps, and learning from experiences on other islands; and

– Facilitating development of enabling frameworks for investment.

1

Vision and Mission• To accelerate renewable energy transition in islands economies

through mutual learning, collaboration, and application of technologies and policies that transform island energy portfolios.

• To provide technical, financial, and policy support to island governments and work intimately with utilities, donors, development organization, and the private sector.

2

Approach • 1. Bring together governments and utilities to develop energy

transition strategies guided by the Playbook process– Phase 0: Island Engagement Process– Phase 1: Setting the Vision– Phase 2: Opportunity Roadmap (Grid Integration)– Phase 3: Project Preparation – Phase 4: Project Execution and Quality Control– Phase 5: Operations and Maintenance– Phase 6: Process Improvement

• 2. Build broad-based support by de-risking initial cohort of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects

• 3. Create a Community of Practice designed to share lessons, create irreversible bottom-up momentum, and build long-term capacity among island energy transition practitioners

3

Activities to Date• CCI has partnered with governments of 25 island nations across

three continents.

– Prepared over 20 renewable energy projects across nine island countries – Facilitated groundbreaking of the 24-megawatt Wigton Wind Farm in Jamaica– Provided negotiation support for geothermal developments in Dominica and St.

Vincent– Worked with the UN Development Programme to establish a 1.3-megawatt solar

rebate program in the Seychelles– Identified over $900 million in investment opportunities with support from SIDS-
