Brethren, there are so many
brothers in our Lodge to be
thankful for, that are taking an
active role in keeping our Lodge
functions running smoothly. Ihave to begin with the kitchen,
finally Brother Kisner gets a
much needed rest from
managing all the meals for over
a year; what a fine job he's
done. Brother Ballrud has
assumed the head chef position,
complemented by brothers
Switzer, Mattox, and Harry, our
new enter apprentice, all
helping out, along with PastMaster, Clint Marshal. Of
course the Junior Warden,
Thomas Johnson, was

coordinating the complete
meals program. In the absence
of Brother Kerce, Brother
Marshal will be wielding the
scepter over all the practices, come and watch the
improvement and enthusiasm
of the Brothers performing the
degrees. Remember, you can
witness these great
performances every Tuesday
night at 6:00. Tuesday the 8th
of March, we have a 2nd
degree scheduled at 6:00 for
Brother Harry. Come one, and
come all. Last but not least,we have Brother Art Pritchard
who is recovering from a fall,
residing at Sky Harbor
continuing care center in
Yucca Valley. Please drop b
and give Brother Pritchard
some encouragement. I’m
sure he would be very plea

I would like to thank Brother
Johnson & Brother Baairud for
their great dinners and breakfast's
last month and for the many
volunteers who helped put it
together. As the weather warms
up, were going to need volunteers
to help clean the grounds to the
lodge. That includes a little
painting and repairing.
I am very proud of Brother
Johnson and Brother Switzer for
their progression in their positions.
They are doing a wonderful job. I
wish it would have been that easy
for me. I would also like to thank
brother Kraychir for his great work
in presenting the educational
quotations to the new members. I
would also like to thank our master
Clarence Chambers for his
perseverance in building up our
lodge to where it is today.
Thank you, S. W. Donald Clark

Brethren and Friends: greetings.Welcome to what should be the
beginning of warmer weather thanks
to the arrival of Spring. As daylight
hours continue to lengthen and the
weather begins to warm up our
activities within the Lodge continue to
grow. February was no exception,
Daughters of the Nile put on a
fantastic Super Bowl party, all who
attended were winners, and of course
the proceeds went to a worthwhile
cause. Special thanks to JoePennington and Jamie for
remembering and taking care of
the Flags along the Highway on
Presidents Day!
Members of Yucca Valley lodge took
time to remember the ladies of brothers
who have passed away at a special
luncheon; my thanks to Joe and Elaine
Johnson, and those who assisted in
putting this event together. Thank you
to Bro. Joop Homburg and Bro. Gary
Mason for making the time to join in,
your attendance was recognized and
much appreciated.
This month we will begin planning our
first Masonic Information Night of theyear, volunteers are needed to make this
event a memorable and successful one.
Thursday nights the lodge continues to
be open for fellowship, as well as
practices, candidate proficiency work, a
mentoring. The third Thursday is
especially set aside for Masonic
education; Brother TC Dowden continue
to present insights, and thought
provoking discussion beyond the ritual o
our craft.

required to attend, and members are
encouraged to participate. Fellowship

And a happy March to all as I bring
cordial greetings to you all. I hope you
had a grand and glorious February, especially affording all the enjoyment
of each and every day, including
Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately I could
not eat all the goodies that were
offered me, but I definitely was put to
the test of resistance. I decided that if I
were to continue eating as I have for
the last 6 years, that I might be bigger
than an average Santa Claus by
Christmas. So I am taking drastic
measures and walking a lot with David
Glenn and his dog buddy and with my
wife’s disciplined menus for good and
healthy eating manners, I will lick this
problem. It also helps my overall
health in general. My biggest test was
the two pound box of See’s Candy my
daughter brought over. And no.....I
haven't had ONE piece. So SAD. But
So GOOD for my internal fortitude. If
any of you would like to call me and
give me a pep talk-I would gladly
listen. Thank You and God bless us all
for those of us in the same boat.
The Widow's luncheon was a grand
success. All had a great time and theentertainment was wonderful as Del
Morin sang his heart out with the
attendees loving every note. Elaine’s
delectable crepes were a hit and
promises to make more good food in
April at our stated meeting dinner. The
menu will be posted in the April
Trestleboard.
Please.....all you Masons. I still have 29
members that have not paid their 2011
dues. So look to your hearts and
wallets and give what is due. Okay.
Thank you very much. And thanks toyou all who have already paid.
A reminder to the brothers that each
3rd Thursday our Trestleboard editor,
T.C. Dowden, brings to our Lodge a
new lesson in Masonry which is very
enlightening. We all participate and
leave with a greater appreciation of our
Craft. Entered Apprentices and
Fellowcrafts are especially welcome.
As all Master Masons, who have gon
this way before will attest that
Masonry is something we are all
striving to learn more about. Resear
can be endless and most of all
educational. Just like the bible … wecan never stop learning. Thank you T
for your hard work and the way you
share the thoughts through your tim
and sharing of your library of books
and knowledge. You are a credit to
our fraternity. Remember SHARING
CARING. I would like to thank the
lodge for allowing me to attend the
Secretarial Retreat which was on Feb
25 - 27 in Irvine, CA. I hope to have
learned many new ways that will
better serve the craft. Especially sin
the lodges have gone hi-tech.Communications are the key in this
computerized era. Masonry wants to
keep pace with the times and I'm on
board. So let’s pull together and he
one another and READ the beautiful
designed TRESTLEBOARD for all even
and please try to attend all that you
can. Let’s fill those seats.

“ Every Mason is different.
Every man that joins our
raternity has his own specific,
but often undefined, needs.
The search for Light in Masonry
is therefore tailored to the
individual Mason’s needs.”
The education topic for our
meeting last month was
Masonic Enlightenment. Weopened the discussion with the
question, “What is Masonic
Enlightenment?”. This led to
an interesting discussion of
what it means to gain “more
Light”. While not specifically
answering the question, it
could be said that more Light is
an individual’s determination.
Given that Masonry is a
progressive, layered science, how do you know when you
find Light? Why is it that the
teachings and symbols are
layered with one piece of
understanding leading to the
next piece of understanding?
Why couldn’t there just be a
tech manual that says, “Learn
these things and you’ll be
there.”?
It brings to mind a scene fromthe movie National Treasure,
when the character Ben Gates
The Editor’s Corner Bro. T.C. Dowden
is upbraided by his father,
saying “one clue just leads you
to another – and then another, and another”. Riley then
bemoans, “Why couldn’t they
ust leave something that says
‘go here, find the treasure and
spend wisely?’” It’s the same
with Masonic Light. The
wealth is hidden because it
requires a journey of discovery.
So, why the allegory and
symbols? A picture is worth a
thousand words, it has beensaid. Yet thousands of volumes
of Work have been written
about what lays behind the
allegory and symbology of
Freemasonry.
The seeking of knowledge and
improvement requires a
curious mind. There must be a
desire to discover the
unknown. It goes beyond,
“what do I need to know?” to
“what don’t I know yet ?”
Allegory and symbology feed
the curious mind. They off
taste, mere sips instead of
gulp. There is no set end p
to this discovery; there is
always another Clue to the
next breakthrough. The
curious mind looks past the
immediate to the next stepEvery Mason is different. E
man that joins our fraternit

The Stained Glass Window
How much beauty is there in a stained glass
window in pitch darkness?
Is there a lesson here for Freemasons?
How much beauty is there in Freemasonry
that is kept from the light, which is left in
the lodge room between communications?
Particularly how much of the beauty of
Freemasonry is developed by those who
have received the degrees, make big
speeches the night they are raised, tell what
Freemasonry is going to do to be worthy of
being Freemasons, then thereafter would
not be known a Freemasons except for the
Emblem worn on the coat?
The beauty of Freemasonry, like that of the
stained glass window, I developed only in
the light, by its practice by those who have
received the degrees, by the observance
its obligations by those who have receive
them, by the practice of charity, by the
association with our fellows in developing
Brotherly Love and Friendship, by visiting
the Brother who is unable to mingle with
his Brethren, by whispering good counsel
in the ears of those who are erred or who
are troubled, by walking away with those
who are lonesome, by a light in the eyes
when we meet one who is entitled to sit
within the Tyled Circle, by rendering to a
brother every kind of service we should
like preformed for us under like
circumstances.Let us keep Freemasonry in the light. S
that it's beauty may be visible.

Journal"

During February, we had
practices for the forthcoming
first degree. By the time you
read this, that degree will be
complete. However, the truly
uplifting thing about the
practices has been the number
of young masons that have
been observing and
participating. Understand that
in this case I use the term
“young mason” to mean a
relatively new mason and in no
way a reference to
chronological age. I make that
distinction because at least one
of those participants is my
senior. Anyway, the point here
is that participation and
camaraderie are up in the
lodge. What I see is a lot of
effort being set forth and some
very fine work being
accomplished. It is truly
amazing to watch these efforts
to master the ritual and most
importantly, to enjoy their
presence in the lodge.
As I look through the records
one thing I have noticed is that
for one reason or another, we
don’t have the name of many of
your spouse’s in those records.
As a result of this long term
shortcoming in our
recordkeeping, we have lost
touch with many of our
Masonic Widows. In some
cases, the same information
shortcoming is true of
telephone numbers. So, next
time you come by the lodge

Masonic Education – Freemasonry in Ireland
Just a stone’s throw from the
government buildings, in the
Georgian-terraced section of Dublin,
stands the headquarters of the Grand
Lodge of Ireland, in Molesworth
Street. The Grand Lodge of Ireland’s
official birth was St John’s Day, 24
June 1725, although it is known that
there were “time immemorial” lodges
before that time. Freemasonry spread
initially around the coast, the earliest
lodges appearing to have been
established around the southern
seaports from Dublin to Limerick and
Galway. There was a very strong link
with maritime Bristol and perhaps thisis whence Irish ‘speculative’
Freemasonry derived. Lodges in
Munster still use the famous “Bristol
Working”.
Irish Freemasonry’s beginnings in
southern Ireland soon extended
inwards and northwards and today it is
Northern Ireland which contains a
majority of lodges. Papal Bulls from
1738 to the 1820s expressly forbade
Roman Catholics from beingFreemasons (before this time at least
50 per cent of masons were Catholics).
Freemason Daniel O’Connell tried to
get the penal laws against Catholics
repealed and during the days when the
government of Ireland was a
Protestant oligarchy, and Catholics
were suppressed, the only place where
Protestants and Catholics could meet
on equal social terms was in a Masonic
lodge.
Today, more Catholics are joining
again. There are no purely Catholic or
Protestant lodges and per the Grand
Secretary, “We do have a law that
disapproves of class lodges that could
be religious or anything else. He is
very keen to see all sections of the
community represented in the lodges. He says, “We do not want cliques, and
by and large we have never had a
problem there - certainly not in my
time.”
Irish Freemasonry has many famous
names associated with it, not least
Arthur, the first Duke of Wellington, a
member of Lodge No 494 from 1775.
And of course, any visitor to Dublin
cannot fail to walk along O’Connell
Street, named after theaforementioned Daniel O’Connell,
“The Liberator”, who was initiated into
Lodge No 198 in Dublin in 1799.
Freemasons’ Hall, built in 1863 on the
site of the former town house of
Richard the first Earl of Rosse (the
first Grand Master), is a listed
building within a splendid terrace andhas undergone extensive remodeling.
As the visitor walks up the stairs of
Dublin’s Freemasons’ Hall, the eye
cannot avoid the depiction of Faith,
Hope and Charity in stained glass.
These virtues, to be found in the
hearts and actions of people
throughout the country, also sum up
the essential identity of Irish
Freemasonry in its undivided entirety
a precious stone, and like so many
treasures of life, in need of men of
clear vision to help us to see it, and to
value it.
Well we are already in ourthird month, and things arelooking good. I would like tothank everyone whocontributed to our successfuldinner and breakfast lastmonth.
This month we will be serving ameal to celebrate St. Patrick’sDay. It will include CornedBeef, Cabbage and Carrots.
Of course, there will be variousdrinks and a desert. Come ondown and enjoy a good mealbefore our meeting.
Also, any ideas that you mayhave for future meals feel freeto bring them to my attentionand we will try and make themhappen.

The Pot of Gold
You came with me on a long arduous journey,
Through many forests and jungles;
The paths confusing and twisted,
Sometimes, I made you miss a turning; And finally we reached the end,
There was no promised pot of gold.
But then my brethren, it is not the gold;
It was the search itself;
The journey and your comradeship,
The jungles we saw
The forests we conquered
The rivers we forded,
And the links we made.
It would not have happened
If it was not for the pot of gold

Famous Mason: James Knox Polk, President, Freemason
Often referred to as the first
"dark horse" President, James K.
Polk was the last of the
Jacksonians to sit in the White
House, and the last strong
President until the Civil War.
He was born in Mecklenburg
County, North Carolina, in 1795.
Studious and industrious, Polk
was graduated with honors in
1818 from the University of
North Carolina. As a young
lawyer he entered politics,
served in the Tennessee
legislature, and became a friend
of Andrew Jackson.
In the House of Representatives,
Polk was a chief lieutenant of
Jackson in his Bank war. He
served as Speaker between 1835
and 1839, leaving to become
Governor of Tennessee.
Until circumstances raised Polk's
ambitions, he was a leading
contender for the Democraticnomination for Vice President in
1844. Both Martin Van Buren,
who had been expected to win
the Democratic nomination for
President, and Henry Clay, who
was to be the Whig nominee,
tried to take the expansionist
issue out of the campaign by
declaring themselves opposed to
the annexation of Texas. Polk,
however, publicly asserted thatTexas should be "re-annexed"
and all of Oregon "re-occupied."
The aged Jackson, correctly
sensing that the people favored
expansion, urged the choice of a
candidate committed to the
Nation's "Manifest Destiny." This
view prevailed at the
Democratic Convention, where
Polk was nominated on the
ninth ballot.
"Who is James K. Polk?" Whigs
jeered. Democrats replied Polk
was the candidate who stood
for expansion. He linked the
Texas issue, popular in the
South, with the Oregon
question, attractive to the
North. Polk also favored
acquiring California.
Even before he could takeoffice, Congress passed a joint
resolution offering annexation
to Texas. In so doing, they
bequeathed Polk the possibility
of war with Mexico, which soon
severed diplomatic relations.
In his stand on Oregon, the
President seemed to be risking
war with Great Britain also. The
1844 Democratic platform
claimed the entire Oregon area, from the California boundary
northward to a latitude of
54'40', the southern boundary
of Russian Alaska. Extremists
proclaimed "Fifty-four forty or
fight," but Polk, aware of
diplomatic realities, knew that
no course short of war was likely
to get all of Oregon. Happily,
neither he nor the British
wanted a war.He offered to settle by
extending the Canadian
boundary, along the 49th
parallel, from the Rockies to the
Pacific. When the British
minister declined, Polk
reasserted the American claim
to the entire area. Finally, th
British settled for the 49th
parallel, except for the southtip of Vancouver Island. The
treaty was signed in 1846.
Acquisition of California prov
far more difficult. Polk sent a
envoy to offer Mexico up to
$20,000,000, plus settlement
damage claims owed to
Americans, in return for
California and the New Mexic
country. Since no Mexican
leader could cede half hiscountry and still stay in powe
Polk's envoy was not received
To bring pressure, Polk sent G
Zachary Taylor to the dispute
area on the Rio Grande.
To Mexican troops this was
aggression, and they attacked
Taylor's forces.
Congress declared war and,
despite much Northern
opposition, supported the
military operations. America
forces won repeated victorie
and occupied Mexico City.
Finally, in 1848, Mexico cede
New Mexico and California in
return for $15,000,000 and
American assumption of the
damage claims.
Polk, leaving office with his
health undermined from hard
work, died in June 1849.
