Dave: That'sthebigthing.You'reTheBiggestLoserbecauseyou'reexercisingallthetimeinsteadoflookingatwhatyouputinyourmouth,right?There'soneepisodewherethere'saguychasingapotatochipandyou'relikethisissobrokenbecauseitdoesn'tmatterifyouchasedit.Ifyoueatit,youlose,right?

Abel: Right,exactly.Thereisn'tnearlyasmuchsabotageonthisshowwhichisreallycooltosee.Alittlebitaboutmyguy,basicallywhenwefirststartedhewasat352poundsandmoreimportantlypeoplemightnothaveseenthewholebackgroundontheshowbuthewasinahead-oncaraccidentyearsago,almostadecadeago,whichbrokehisneck.Afterthathappenedhehadtohaveaplateputinandhehadabunchofotherdifferentinjuriesbutoverthecourseofthenextfewyearshewasgettingsickerandsickerandnoonereallyknewwhy.TheyeventuallyfoundoutthattherewasStaphinthatoriginalplatethattheyputin.Itwasmanifestingitselfthroughouthisbody.

Hegotseptic.Hehadabloodclotinhislungandultimatelyhewashospitalizedforabout13monthsandoneofthemostcrushingthingsforhimaboutitwasthathe'sagrandparent,he'stheoldestguyontheshowat47yearsold,andhemissedhisgrandchildbeingbornbecausehewassosick.HewasinthehospitalandsotakinghimbackoutofthattosomethingthatresembleshealthwasahugejourneyforhimandIthinkreallyinspiringforalotofpeoplebecauseit'snotlikehehadtheoptionofbeingacardiobuddy.Infactthewholeshow,alotofpeopledon'tknowthis,hehadastressfractureinhiskneesorunningwasn'tanoptionasaformoftraining.Itwasbasicallyjustgoingoutthereandwalkingwithhisgrandchildrenwiththestrollerupthehillsbehindhishouse,walkingwithhiswife,anddoingsomeamountofstrength-basedtrainingtomakesurethathemaintainedmusclewhilehewaslosingfat.That'sreallythemostcriticalthingyouwanttodowhenyou'retalkingabouthealthanyway.

Abel: Youknowwhat?WhenwestartedhangingoutIwassoamazedbyhowopenheisandhowpassionateheisandmostimportantlyhowsensitiveheis.He'sveryintunewithpeople'sstruggles.He'sbeentherehimself.Ididn'trealizethisbutwhenhewasincollegeheputon50poundsandhedoeshisbesttodeeplyunderstandotherpeople'sstrugglesandworkingwithhimwasjustablastbecausewegottobereallygoodfriendsbytheendofit.Hishusband,Scott,wasalsoafantasticdudesothey'reinspiringfigures,notnecessarilyfromthesamepartofthefitnessandhealthworldasweare.

Mostofthetimewe'resayingifyouwanttobeafitnessjunkiethat'sgreatandyoucanhavealotoffundoingitbutit'snotnecessaryforalotofthisstuff.ItmightseemlikeacontrarianpointofviewthansomeonelikeShawnT.He'salotoftimestalkingaboutintenseexercisebutIthinkwherewemeetinthemiddleisfindingthatjoyinwhateveryou'redoing.Forhim,hisbackgroundisasaperformerandadancerandsohebringsthattotheexerciseworldandIthinkit'sverysimilartowhatIexperiencewhenIplaymusicandwhenIsing.It'ssomethingwhereyou'reinthezoneandyoucantellthatthroughoutthewholecompetition,throughoutthewholeTVshowhe'sthereforpeopleandhe'scoachingthemthroughsomereallytoughmoments,someofthehardestmomentsintheirentirelives.
