The main building was designed by architect Josiah Conder, who
produced many Western-style buildings from the Meiji into the
Taisho periods. An example of classical architecture exhibiting
many Baroque characteristics, the building offers symmetry, an
elliptical atrium, and an appealing arced veranda. The Georgian
interior is relatively bright in tone and incorporates distinctive
f ireplaces and furniture. Guests will also enjoy the numerous
paintings and sculptures by masters such as Turner and Rodin that
can be found here and there throughout the building.
The club's Wine Cellar holds an impressive 12,000 bottles.
Stories are told of how this unparalleled selection even played
a significant role in the decision to award the 1964 Olympic
Games to Tokyo. Resting quietly in the collection are many rare
items not of ten seen today, such as imported whiskies and
wines bearing stickers affixed in the 1970s under the Liquor
Tax Act. The bar awaits with an array of roughly 2,000 Western
liquors and other drinks.

The gardens of the Mitsui Tsunamachi Villa, following the Taisho period fashion for gardens with parallel Japanese- and Western-style
sections, consists of the Renaissance garden in front of our main building and the expansive Japanese-style hill-and-pond stroll garden
one level below. Centered on a fountain, the Renaissance garden was designed by Josiah Conder. The Japanese garden ̶designed by Setsuan
Yabunouchi and landscaped by Tokujiro Shibata̶ was built on the former site of the Aizu-Matsudaira clan's Mita Villa, renowned as having
one of the finest gardens of the Edo period, supplemented by the introduction of numerous garden rocks and 40 stone lanterns. Enjoy the
charms of the season and scenic views from the water’s edge while walking among the garden rocks, stone lanterns, and stone pagodas.

Focal point of the garden-side facade , th i s doub le -cupped fountain standing in a quatrefoil pool was a Conder favorite.
❶ Fountain
Modeled on those at the Okunoin precinct at Kasuga Shrine, this lantern has lotus petals carved above and below its platform.
D Okunoin Stone Lantern
Often used in shrine architecture, the heart-like “boar's eye” shape is said to invite good fortune and ward off evil.
A Zendo-ji Stone Lantern
The waterfall cascades over great boulders arranged in three steps for a drop of 7 meters. The Showa Emperor visited the area in 1953.
❸ Waterfall
Most of the stone lanterns in the garden are made of Mikage stone or Kurama stone, but the Kasuga Great Stone Lantern is made of Shirakawa stone (biotite granite).
F Kasuga Great Stone Lantern
This stone lantern is made of Kurama stone in the image of the one that stands before the Phoenix Hall at Byodo-in temple.
C Byodo-in Stone Lantern
The pebbles lining the shore̶and the rocks resembling an eboshi court hat and mythical Mt. Horai̶are typical of traditional landscaping.
❺ View of Shore and Pond
Positioned near the Stone Bridge by Setsuan Yabunouchi, this type of lantern̶known as the Yabunouchi style̶is rarely seen in Japan.
G Rhombus Lantern
The bridge over the Great Pond offers lovely scenic views and a spot for watching carp. Feel free to feed them from the bank at the foot of the bridge.
❹ Arch Bridge
As if drawn to one another, this zelkova and machilus are intertwined from their roots to their branches. Estimated to be more than 500 years old.
❽ Lover Trees
Usually blossoming beginning in late April , the wisteria trell is provides welcome shade through early summer. Note also the petrifi ed wood nearby.
❼ Crooked Bridge with Wisteria
Known as the Mt. Bungo area, here you will find a moss garden, newly planted wild cherries, and hydrangeas that color the seasons.
10 Mt. Bungo
Conder loved roses. The rose garden is centered on fragrant hybrid tea varieties so please enjoy them from up close.
❷ Rose Garden
Made roughly 300 years ago, this is the oldest tower in the garden and offers the sense of exploring ancient ruins.
E Korean Stone Pagoda
Measuring about 6 meters, this large Tsukuba stone was quite a struggle to transport from Shinagawa Station when the garden was built.
B Badger Stone
The zigzag bridge over the lotus pond offers lovely views in the summer when lotus f lowers bloom at water’s edge.
❻ Lotus Pond and Zigzag Bridge
This large pagoda is made of Mikage stone and has many overlapping tiers. Standing about 9 meters tall, it is the symbol of the Mt. Bungo area.
H Thirteen-tiered Stone PagodaNot actually used as boat landings, these areas represented the image of a boat about to row out to sea.
