TPS: Fundamentals - LCN Implementation

Course Overview

Course number: TPS-PT030

Course length: 5 days

This competency based course is designed for plant engineers, project engineers and electrical/instrument trades people and provides them with the skills to configure a Local Control Network (LCN) system. Areas of emphasis include information about the hardware layout of the various LCN devices including their cabling and interconnections, and practice in identifying component parts and ‘building’ a simple LCN system. Attendees are provided with detailed descriptions of the functions of the various LCN device types and they become familiar with the decisions that are made on ‘partitioning’ the functionality of a Local Control Network (LCN) system. Attendees become familiar with database definition and point building in classroom sessions, which are then followed by practical implementation exercises.

Desirable Skills and/or Experience

Attendees should be qualified electrical / instrument trades people or engineers who have gained experience

in the configuration / implementation of Distributed Control Systems, preferably Honeywell TDC 2000 Basic Hiway. Knowledge of Disk Operating Systems would be advantageous.

Course Topics

Given the various Local Control Network (LCN) devices listed below, be able to identify each piece of equipment. In addition, be able to identify an LCN node by the cards in its chassis. LCN devices included are:

o Hiway Gateway o Network Interface Module and Universal Control

Network o Universal Station o Multiple Chassis History Module o WDA History Module

Be able to describe the function of the various Printed Wire Assemblies common to all LCN modules, identify the hardware items that are common to all LCN modules, and describe the communication protocol used on the LCN

Given a Universal Station (US) or Global User Station (GUS) and an LCN, be able to use the Group and Detail displays to determine a point’s mode, alarm limits, operating limits and ranges

Given a Universal Station (US) or Global User Station (GUS) and a LCN, be able to perform point operations including changing setpoints, outputs, modes and building a group

Given a Universal Station (US) or Global User Station (GUS) and LCN, be able to perform the following utility operations from the Command processor

List a volume Set a pathnameAssign a volume descriptor Copy a CartridgePrint a listing Protect and unprotect filesCreate a directory Delete a file Rename a volume Rename a fileCopy files Direct/redirect output

Given a Universal Station (US) or Global User Station (GUS) and removable media containing the appropriate startup software, be able to enter check and install the Network Configuration File (NCF) for a Local Control Network (LCN)

Given a diagram of a UCN and a list of specific Process manager control requirements, be able to enter, load and checkpoint the Network and Box Data Points required to define the UCN
