TORQUE CONVERTER

I RODUCT I O N TN

In 1910 George Constantinesco invented torque

converter

He was a british auto mech engr

DEF OF TERMS

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

o Hydrodynamic

It is a branch of theoretical Fluid dynamics

which deals with flow of an ideal fluid. A device

using fluid as principle of its func is called

hydrodynamic device

o Fluid Coupling

A fluid coupling is a hydrodynamic device used

to transmit rotating mech power. It has been

used in auto tx as an altn to a mech clutch

o Torque Converter

A device which tfrs the torque of the engine to

the tx gradually, using a fluid. A torque

converter is a modified form of a fluid coupling,

and unlike fluid coupling , is able to multiply

torque

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

To multiply the engine torque at low RPM

To lock up at high speed

To inc and dec the engine torque according to

Torque Multiplication

Action Torque converterActions

Pump Stator Turbine

1st torque multiplication

Oil leaves the outer vanes of the pump

- Hits the turbine giving it a push

2nd torque multiplication - -

Pushing the turbine and tending it to mov in the same dir of pump

3rd torque multiplication

Oil after leaving the stator enters the pump give it a further push

Oil enters pri stator and then sec stator

Oil leaves the inner vanes of the turbine

ADVS AND DISADVS

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

Advs

o It needs no linkages

o It engages power train smoothly

oActs as a safety device

oReduces vibration

oReq less maint

Disadvs

o It can cause heating up of engine at low speed

oMore fuel consumption

LATEST TRENDS

25

LATEST TRENDS

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

Variable Pitch Stator

o In most cases the stator blades are ‘fixed’ at a predetermined angle

o In special designs of modern vehs variable pitch stator assy is used. For normal op in drive range, the stator blades are auto set at a low angle

o For inc acceleration greater torque is obtained by setting stator blades at high angle

Multiple Sec Members

o These torque converters have more sec members

o For example, five unit torque converter with pump, turbine, stator, lockup clutch and sec pump

o Purpose is to avoid slippage at high speeds

26

DEFECTS

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

Overheating - Caused due to low lvl

of oil

Slippage - Caused due to

overheated oil

Shudder - Symptom of

overheating oil

27

CARE AND MAINT

STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4

Use correct grade of oil

Oil lvl should be checked frequently

Never park veh in gear
