The Center for Arabic Language & Culture (CALC) and the Center for Middle
Eastern Studies (CMES) invite you to a special exhibition of Arabic calligraphy
produced by students in the Chicago Public Schools Arabic world language
program. This gallery night is a culmination of CALC's "Calligrapher-in-Resi-
dence" program, which featured expert calligrapher Majed Ajamia. Over eight
weeks, Majed taught the fundamentals of Arabic calligraphy to students from
Lindblom Math & Science Academy, Lincoln Park High School, Lane Tech
College Prep High School, and Disney II Magnet School. Following a live
demonstration from Majed, students who participated in the program will
present their artwork, discuss what Arabic calligraphy means to them, and share
what they have learned about this global artistic tradition.
To complement the exhibition, the critically acclaimed band Salaam will
perform music from the Middle East and North Africa.
This program was made possible in part by a grant from Qatar Foundation International.
