2018 / 1439-40Khalfan RattansiHaji Khalfanbhai Rattansi was amongst the early supporters of a new movement in the history of Khojas as they began to imbibe the teachings of Qur’an and Ahlulbayt (as). Every year, Khlafanbhai used to send thirty to forty individuals for Hajj and Ziyarat at his own expense. His contribution was not limited to financial aid when he pledged to support the movement with ten thousand Indian rupees, but he also had to endure the pain of excommunication and being refused to bury his daughter in the local cemetery. Thus, his support in laying the foundation of Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Community remains unparalleled. Truly when wealth is accompanied by unconditional support, steadfastness, humbleness and piety, it remains a perpetual blessing of Allah swt. Read more on: lnk.wf/KhalfanRattansi

Lalan AlidinaLalan Alidina, based in Karachi in the second half of the nineteenth century, used to preach the tenets of the Qur’an and Ahlulbayt (as) and thus kindle the flame of guidance in the hearts of the Khojas of Karachi. Shaheed Lalan was brutally attacked in 1876 but this incident never deterred him from his passion of preaching the message of Ahlulbayt (as) through majalis of Imam Husayn (as). Accused of promulgating ‘innovations’, the preacher was shot in the broad daylight of Karachi in 1878 and his body was taken to Karbala for permanent burial. The Kharadar Khoja mosque and Imambargah in Karachi stand as a testimony to the profound contribution of the likes of Lalan Alidina.Read more on: lnk.wf/LalanAlidina

All dates subject to the sighting of the moon.

Information based on data from the H.M. Nautical Almanac Office and the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

Qamar Dar Akrab - According to narrations we should refrain from reciting the Nikah during Qamar Dar Akrab when the moon is passing through the phase of Scorpio.

New Moon -The New Moon phase is defined to be the moment when the moon is almost directly between the Earth and the Sun. At this moment the moon’s dark surface faces the Earth. The New Moon is completely invisible. The date and time of this invisible New Moon is commonly found in almanacs, newspapers and calendars.

First Crescent -The Islamic month begins with the visible First Crescent and not with the invisible New Moon. The First Crescent is usually sighted in the western sky just after sunset on the first or second evening after the New Moon phase. The sighting depends upon the altitude of the crescent above the horizon, the time difference between sunset and moonset and the angular distance between the sun and the moon.

Visible Crescent -One should not confuse the New Moon with the visible thin crescent. It should be realised that the new crescent following a lunar month of 30 days will be brighter and stay longer in the sky than the crescent following a month of 29 days.

Regional Variations -The Islamic dates are based on expectation of crescent sighting in Europe calculated from the latest available scientific data. During 1439/40 A.H. regional variations may occur for some months. To fulfil the Shariah requirements we will continue to ascertain that the actual sighting has occurred on the days expected.
