Introduction

• Different father/son modeling interests • Job involved much travel by car.• Looked for more modern industries to use

– Limited space– Adaptable

• Saw unique railcars while driving past the yard• Contacted IP for permission to visit

WHAT WE’LL LEARN TODAY

• General overview• Different buildings

• Description and purpose

• Appearance (construction); • Equipment (vehicles) used on the yard.• Possible ways to model the yard.

General Theme

• Centralized loading process• Drivers weigh in, transfer loads, weigh out• Operators loaded railcars from truck, or

ground storage• Operators notified CSX for pick up of full cars

and set out of empties

Potential for Modeling

• Simple– Close representation using available kits and

rolling stock– Model part or all, depending on space

• Complex– Scratch build or kit bash exact replicas of buildings

and railcars

YARD TRACTORS

There were two different types of “yard tractors” at Vass.

–the semi-tractor used to move the yard trailers around

–the tractor-mounted front end loader with the rear scraper blade

Each served a very different purpose. © Gary Robinson 1998-2015 60
