The 20th of August

One of our oldest Hungarian National Holidays

This day is also the nameday of Stephen

We celebrate on this day: King Saint Stephen

and the Foundation of the Christian State

At the end of his life King St. Stephen offered his country to

Blessed Virgin on this day.

On the 20th of August in 1083 King Leslie I. canonized the relics of King

Stephen I.

In 1771Maria Theresahas made this day a National

Holiday.

She has brought the Holy Right (King St. Stephen’s right hand) to Buda. In every year on the 20th of August Hungarian people take

the Holy Right in procession across Budapest.

On this day we celebrate the first bread of the year after the harvest.

Several countries take part in the

Flower Festival to show their flower

compositions.

Since 1966 we organise the Flower

Festival on this holiday in Debrecen.
