The Sawtell Club was hosted by the
Woolgoolga Rotary Club to visit
the new Sikh Heritage Museum of
Australia.
The Museum opened its doors in
April this year . Founded by Guru
Nanak in the 15th century and
based on his teachings and those
of 10 subsequent gurus, Sikhism is
the world's fifth-largest organised
religion. In Woolgoolga, 300
families worship at the gurdwara
(temple) .
Uncut hair (kesh) and comb
(kanga) are two of the five "Ks"
worn by baptised Sikhs; the others
are circular bangles (kara), symbol-
ising God's eternity; a small double
edged sword (kirpan), represent-
ing day and night; and under
shorts (kachera).
The Sikh Gurus taught that
women and men are equal.
Women and men pray together.
Women can work, lead
congregations and be preachers.
Sikhs first came to Australia to
work in the cane fields of north
Queensland, but started to settle
in Woolgoolga in 1890. Before
World War II, Punjabi Sikhs were
given three rights above any
other migrants in Australia. The
right to vote; right to a pension,
and the third most important
right, to bring their dependents
to Australia.

A reporter was interviewing Jack Nicklaus. He said,
“Jack you are spectacular. Your name is synonymous
with golf. You really know your way around a golf
course. What’s your secret?”
To which Jack replied, “The holes are numbered!”
