Today,ChristiansenterintothefinalstageoftheLentenSeasonleadinguptothecentralmysteryofourfaith.IwouldliketofocusourattentiontodayonaFranciscanapproachtooraFranciscanspiritualityoftheCross. IfyouweretotourtheChristiancatacombsinRome,youwouldseeanumberofsymbolsetchedintothewalls.Curiously,however,theonesymbolyouwouldnotfindistheCross.Ittookagood300+yearsbeforeChristiansslowlybegantoadopttheCrossasasymbolofourfaith.FortheearlyChristians,theCrosswasasignofutterdefeat,anembarrassingreminderofhowourLordandSaviorwasexecuted.Itwasliketellingastory,butstoppinginmid-sentencebecauseitdidn’tportray“andthen,whathappened”.ItevokedthewordsofridiculespokenbyJesus’tormentors:“Comedownnowfromthecross,andthenwewillbelieveinyou”(Mt24:42;Mk15:32). Overtime, thereweretwofluctuatingwavesofinfluenceintheChurch.Duringsomeperiods, humanintellectreignedasawayofgetting toknowGod,andatother times, the focus shifted toexperiencingGod throughhumansensesandemotions.Franciscansplayedaprominentroleinbothofthesemovements.AmongthegreatphilosophersandtheologianswereSt.BonaventureandDunsScotus.TheFranciscanSchoolofThoughtwasnotidenticaltotheDominicanSchoolofThomasAquinas,orothers.Weofferedadifferentslantonthings,anuancedperspective. ChristputhisarmaroundFrancis,andFrancis,amanauthenticallyinlovewithChrist,extendshisarmtoChristwithtendernessandintensity.FranciswantedtobesointimatelyunitedwithChristthatleavingallelse,hefollowedChristwithouthesitation—whereverthatmightlead,whateverthatmightentail.Asthoseofusinalovingcommitmenttootherssay:“Ingoodtimesandinbad.” The tau – a symbol adopted by Francis himself – also has aprivilegedplaceinourFranciscanspirituality. It’snotsimplyapieceof jewelry or ornamentation, but something we wear outwardlyeithertoourpraiseortoourshame.JustasintheOur Father we pray thatGod forgive us our sins [i.e., trespasses] aswe forgiveothers, so the tau proclaims to everyonewho seesme –withoutneedingexcusesorexplanations:“judgemebymydeeds”;“judgemebywhatyousee”,because“bythisshalleveryoneknowthatyouaremydisciples:ifyouloveothers”(Jn13:35). Todaywe celebrate sisters and brotherswhomade living theGospel way of life after the example of St. Francis, the priorityin their lives.ToyouIsay:continue toembraceChrist.ContinuetogivearealandlivingGospelwitness.ContinuetohelpuswhoproclaimthatjustasChristdiedforloveofourlove,wemightdieforloveofhislove.Because,ifwedon’thaveanythingtodiefor,wedon’thaveanythingtoliveforeither.
