ATOMS

Atoms are the basic building blocks of ordinary matter. Atoms can join together to form molecules, which in turn form most of the objects around you. Atoms are composed of particles called protons, electrons and neutrons.

Common Elements:

Hydrogen (H) Carbon (C) Calcium (Ca) Oxygen (O) Phosphorus (P) Nitrogen (N)

HOW TO DRAW AN ELECTRON

DRAWING AN ATOM

What is the periodic table?

The periodic table is a chart of chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number so that elements with similar atomic structure ( or similar chemical properties) appear in vertical columns and is organised like a giant grid.

The number of periods refers to the number of shells of the atom and all the elements under the same group have similar properties.

Groups alkali metals and alkaline earths.

Elements in these groups are the metal resembling alkaline earth and metals, the extreme reactivity means their never found in pure form as they would simply combust underground.

THE METALS

The metal's are the common metals we know and love, the copper wire for your power, the steel in your forks and knives. Metal type elements are the most common elements taking up3/4 of the periodic table.

Halogen group is a group full of very mildly reactive gases, when applied to a flame they give off colored and poisons vapor, as you move down the group the elements get heavier, where some would float others fall. There never found in pure form in nature excepting some types of salt.

HOW TO FIND THE NUMBER OF PROTONS, ELECTRONS AND NEUTRONS IN AN ATOMS.

An ion is an atom that has gained or lost one or more electron and therefor has a negative or positive charge, it is a variant of the same element.

MOLECULES AND PERIODIC TABLE GROUPINGS

➤ What is a molecule?

➤ A molecule is the product of two or more atoms from the periodic table bonding together, ending in chemical equation for a molecule like so: E.g. H2O = 2 hydrogen 1 oxygen

➤ Why is the periodic table is its order?

➤ The periodic table is a way to organize the elements based on their similarities, the element with the same number of electrons in a particular subshell are in the same same columns. Atoms with the same number of shells fall into the same periods.
