3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family
There are a few events that I want to draw the
attention of the parish to in the coming weeks.
The first is the “Youth Summit” that is scheduled
for Saturday morning January 23 @ 9.30 am in the
school auditorium.
Since arriving in the parish over a year ago, a
frequent complaint has been the inadequacy of our
efforts to reach out to the youth of the parish.
Admittedly, this is a complaint that is common to
many parishes, but that should not prevent us from
marshaling our forces to address this issue in a
comprehensive way. That means looking at the needs
not only of teenagers, but the needs of young
families, young adults and children of the parish. An
expected outcome would be the establishment of a
youth council along the lines of the parish pastoral
council, who would create a plan and define the steps
we need to take to respond to the needs of this large
and important part of our parish family. If you have
any thoughts, or any hopes, or any interest in the
outcome, please join us for this important initiative.
I also want to draw your attention to the March for
Life on Friday, January 22. This is always a
memorable, and even life changing experience for
those who care enough to make a statement by their
presence in favor of the right of babies to sit at the
table of life. Traditionally, the march is dominated
by young people, who care.
Irrespective of your age, if you are young at heart,
you will not want to miss this opportunity to add your
voice in defense of the unborn.
I also draw your attention to the meeting of the
Spirituality Committee scheduled for Wednesday
evening this week at 7.00PM in the Rectory.
Fr Harry Cullen.
New Altar Servers
If you have not sent in your altar serving scheduling
form, please do so ASAP. You will not be scheduled
to serve Mass beginning February until you have
submitted this form. Although you have been
commissioned as an altar server, you cannot consider
yourself a full fledged altar server until you are
scheduled for Masses.
I would also appeal to all altar servers to be
responsible in showing up for your assigned Masses.
I could not avoid noticing over the holidays that there
were times when servers did not show up for assigned
Masses. This should not happen.
Second Collections
As predicted, the Sunday collection did not
drop significantly with the elimination of
the second collections the past two weeks.
As we have been reminding you for the
past number of weeks, we have eliminated
many of the second weekly (green envelop)
collections. Hopefully, this may simplify
your giving to the Church and help you
budget accordingly. I remind you of your
new years resolution (remember?) to make
an increase in your contribution in the first
(white envelop) collection each Sunday.
Having said that, you will notice that there
is a second collection this weekend—for
Diocesan Assessment. We will continue to
have periodical collections for this, as well
as for approximately 13 “outside” special
causes that are required by Diocesan
regulation.
Christmas Collection
The final count for the Christmas Collection is not
available yet, since contributions continue to come in.
When the final tally is available we will report the final
number. At this point we are in line to, at least equal,
and probably exceed the collection over last year.

A reflection from St. Augustine -
These lines are probably the most famous in all his writings - taken from his ”Confessions” - they tell of his quest for God....
Late have I loved you,
Beauty so ancient and so new,
late have I loved you!
Lo, you were within, but I outside,
seeking there for you,
and upon the shapely things you have made
I rushed head long,
I, misshapen
You were with me, but I was not with you.
They held me back far from you,
those things which would have no being
were they not in you.
You called, shouted, broke through my deafness;
you flared, blazed, banished my blindness;
you lavished your fragrance,
I grasped, and now I pant for you;
I tasted you,
and I hunger and thirst;
you touched me,
and I burned for your peace.
The Center in Asbury Park
Get meal containers on
Sunday, January 17th and return
filled meal containers on
Sunday, January 24th. Please, if you don’t want to contribute frozen meals to the Center, remember, we need non-perishable toiletry items as well. The Center provides "Hygiene Bags" for our clients to assist them with their basic needs. Many of these items are things that cannot be gotten with food stamps and yet they are necessary items. If you can help The Center with these items we would be most appreciative. The basic needs items are: Shaving Cream, Deodorant, Hand Lotion, Hypo-Allergenic Body Lotion, Mouth Wash, Body Soap, Band-Aids, Hair Conditioner, Shampoo, Toothpaste, &
Toilet Paper. Containers for this collection are given out on the 3rd week-end of every month. On the 4th weekend frozen meals and the above mentioned articles are returned and delivered to the Center.
For more info call 732-774-3416 or visit www.thecenterinap.com. These people are our brothers and sisters in need. Please help them.
Prayer of a (young) old person
(by special request)
“Lord, now that I am growing old, keep me from the
fatal habit of thinking that I must say something on
every subject and on every occasion. Release me
from the craving to straighten out everyone's life.
Make me thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not
bossy. Keep my mind free from the needless
recitation of endless details; give me wings to get to
the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They
are increasing, and the love of rehearsing them is
growing sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the
glorious lesson, that occasionally I may be mistaken.
Keep me reasonably sweet; a sour old person is one
of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the
ability to see beauty in the most unexpected of
places, and splendor in unexpected people. Amen”

Youth Town Hall Meeting
If you are interested in the future of
the youth of the parish, we invite you
to come to attend a meeting to
explore, discuss and plan for the
future of the youth of the parish. The
meeting will be facilitated by Rudy
Gomez, the Diocesan Youth Advisor.
It is hoped that from this event, a
Youth Council will be formed for the
parish to chart the direction forward,
and to create meaningful structures
that will serve the many needs of the
young people, and young adults, of
the parish. The meeting will take
place in the school gymnasium on
January 23 (Saturday) at 9.30 AM.
IS GOD CALLING YOU!
Our Diocesan Priesthood Vocation Discernment meeting
is a wonderful opportunity to share how God is calling you
to serve in His Church. In these sessions we talk about the
issues that affect our vocation: How does God call me?
How can I know where God wants me to serve Him?
What is the life of priestly ministry? What are the
qualities that make a holy priest? What is the formation
process like? Through prayer, experience, and a strong
dedication to one’s spiritual life, discernment emerges as a
gift from God, leading us in the right direction.
You are invited to share your journey with us in these
discernment meetings for the Diocesan Priesthood. Our
next meeting will be held on Sunday, January, 24, 2016,
from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint
Mary of the Assumption, 149 North Warren Street,
Trenton, New Jersey. Join Rev. Msgr. Joseph Roldan, as
he shares his experiences of the priesthood, leads a
discussion about discernment and vocations. It would be
great to see you and hear how the Lord is working in your
life.
For more information and to register, please contact
the Diocese of Trenton Office of Vocations at
vocations@dioceseoftrenton.org or by calling (609) 406
-7449. We look forward to seeing you there!

Daughters of St. Catharine and
St. Margaret
Our next meeting is
Thursday, January 28, 2016 @ 7:00PM in St. Margaret Hall
Please join us for a very unique and inspirational meeting with Guest Speaker Author Andrea Jo Rodgers who will share
her local rescue stories.
In 28 years as a volunteer EMT with the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, Andrea Jo Rodgers has responded to numerous life-and-death emergencies, assisting people in their most vulnerable moments. Andrea has included many of these inspirational rescue stories in her first book, At Heaven's Edge: True Stories of Faith and Rescue, published by Harvest House Publishers.
After her own life-threatening elevator accident, Andrea became inspired to share brief, real-life stories of heroic courage in the face of fear. In times of intense suffering, she has repeatedly witnessed signs of God’s quiet intervention and healing presence. Some victims faced their mortality head-on and cried out to God for help. Many experienced fleeting, but life-changing connections with their first-responders. Often these crises became unexpected sources of inspiration.
Andrea will discuss what inspired her to write At Heaven’s Edge and how the book came to fruition. She will also share several selections from the book, such as the occasion in which numerous bystanders, police, and EMS helped to rescue a young girl who was accidentally buried alive in sand. In another emergency, God orchestrated the rescue of a gentleman by bringing together an off-duty fireman, police and first aid squad members, and an EMT who was able to fix a damaged defibrillator with her teeth!
"I was swept up in each of the stories... you will be captured by the real life drama found on every page...." Reverend David Cotton, Manager, Pastoral Care Department -- Jersey Shore University Medical Center
“These true stories include some that made me laugh and some that brought tears to my eyes. They are beautifully told, filled with miracles, courage, grace and drama. I was moved by the tales of young lives just beginning and some older ones ending with grace and love. AT HEAVEN’S EDGE is truly an inspirational book that you will remember forever.” -The Mews News
Andrea began volunteering with the Spring Lake First Aid Squad while in high school and continues to volunteer to this day. Over the years, she has responded to more than 6,800 first-aid and fire calls. She holds a clinical doctorate in physical therapy and has worked as a physical therapist in a trauma center for over 21 years.
For questions or more information, please call Gretchen Stevens at 732-213-7475 or email Gretchenstevens22@gmail.com.

Two brothers worked in the scrap business. One day they
decided to go to confession. The first one goes in and came
out after a short time. The second was in for a long time,
and when he came out his brother asked why it took so long.
“I told the priest I took the lead off the convent roof”
he said. “Ah, you fool” said his brother “You're supposed
to tell him your sins, not your business”.
May you have the hindsight
To know where you’ve been
And foresight to know where you're going
And the insight to know when you're going too far.
