Customer Experience

NYC’s Airports had 21,000 complaints in 2014

La-Guardia Airport received 1,360 Complaints in 2014 from one street alone!

Design RequirementsCapacity: 174 passengers, 5 crewRange: at least 7000 kmCruise speed: 0.8 MNoise level: 15 dB improvement from 118 dB

Weight EstimationMaximum Takeoff Weight: 82,200 kg

Empty Weight: 42,500 kg

Maximum Fuel Weight: 16,900 kg

Aircraft Noise Research & Data

Medical Effects of a DNL(dBA) of:

45-50 Interruption of Sleep

50-60 Speech Interference

65-75 Extra Auditory Physiological effects

75-85 Minor Hearing Loss

dB Sound Level: The dB is a logarithmic way of describing a sound pressure ratio. DNL: scale of measuring the average dB level while weighing night noise heavier. Acceptable dBA w/o Significant Complaints

Day dBA: < 55Night dBA: < 45

OSHA Suggests <90 dB for 8 hours a day.

Wing Dimensions

Wing surface area = 144.8 m^2

Aspect ratio = 9

Span = 36.11 m

Average chord = 4.01 m

Quarter chord sweep = 30°

Tail Selection - V-Tail

A V tail design was chosen in order for the plane to be distinguishable from other similar planes

Surface area of the tail = 47.6 m^2

Span = 13.8 m

Average chord = 3.45 m

Tail control surface area = 9.75 m^2

Boeing 787

Interior Selection29 rows, 174 passengers

20” width, 36” seat pitch

Leaves room for ~30-35” aisle

Brings cabin width to 4m

Larger seat pitch and more seats bring fuselage length to 41.67 m

Final Design

Future Steps● More in Depth Materials Selection

● FEA/CFD

● Structural Components

● More improvements focusing on air pollution
