About Information Professional

An Information Professional (“IP”) strategically uses information in his/her job to advance the mission of the organization. This is accomplished through the development, and management of information resources and services. IPs includes, but is not limited to, librarians, knowledge managers, chief information officers, web developers, information brokers, and consultants.

New Roles for Information ProfessionalsThere are key areas where information professionals have particular opportunities for renewing and extending their traditional skills within an environment centered on electronic information. These include, for example:

the cataloging and classification of quality Internet resources;

a new emphasis on coordination of access to online resources rather than simply identification of resources in response to user enquiry;

the Strategic development of networks within institutions of which the library is a part;

Education of users to become computer literate and make affective use of networked resources.

Strategies for Information Professionals are include:•Developing and maintaining a portfolio of cost-effective, client-valued information services that are aligned with the strategic directions of the organization and client groups•Building a dynamic collection of information resources based on a deep understanding of clients’ information needs•Gathering evidence to support decisions about the development of new services and products
