Dear Readers,
The last few months at ICS have
been happily full of activity, target achievements and
events. We began our year with a super successful
Survivors Day event, followed by a evening of brilliant
music by the Char Yaar Group. We’ve attended many
stimulating work-shops and have even held some of
our own. Our workshop on “Role Play “ was a first for
most of our volunteers and much appreciated and
applauded.
Like every year, the third quarter of the year is when
we hold our Annual Seminar. This year, we have a topic
which is the “ flavour of the season ” - Artificial
Intelligent, or AI as it is popularly called. Of course, our
focus will be on AI in the Health Sector.
Artificial Intelligence is a vast and complex subject. To
our limited understanding, it has been created by
human intelligence, programmed with necessary
algorithms . The machines are now endowed with the
intellectual process of the human mind - the ability to
reason, discover a pattern and meaning from a mass
of pre fed data, to generalise this and give unbiased
opinions.
Indian Cancer Society has been aware of the
complexity of the subject, but not its existing scope or
present/future capacity. Since AI is already in
operation in Healthcare, it is necessary for us to
explore the ways in which it impacts the gamut of
Screening, Diagnostics and Treatment. Our Seminar
this year seeks to step beyond the comfort of “ dead
habit” and encourage fresh thinking as well as new
ways of operation.
For our present Session, we have a panel of experts
who are leaders in this field, who will strive to educate
without frightening. We urge you all, young and old,
to come and partake of this enlightening experience .
Last in this editorial, but First on our list , are our
Devoted Volunteers. A huge Thank You for all you
have been doing. ICS would not be what it is without
each one of you.

The Narcissus flower or Nargis in Hindi, Persian and Urdu poetry, represents the Beloved’s eye. It is also the symbol of hope eternal, for its shy presence perfumes the air of the darkest winter and hints of brighter times ahead. Cancer Survivors similarly are living symbols of hope and happiness.

Our much loved Founder, Mr. K. K. Mehta,
hung up his boots on the 27th March after a
long and illustrious career. Much will be said
about the magnificent edifice he built in the
service of suffering humanity , but not many
know that Mr Mehta’s razor sharp vision first
focussed on the Indian Cancer Society. He
insisted on a professi-onally run institution where Cancer Awareness
and Primary Screening were given the importance they deserved.
He demanded complete transparency in all dealings, leaving no
room for any funny business. Nothing, certainly no ego, stood in the
way of him achieving his dreams. He was the only CEO who demoted
himself regularly, going from being Chairman to Vice Chairman .
At ICS he appointed able deputies and was a living example of his
value systems. It was with great joy that he visited our new offices in
December 2017 and with the greatest pride, we showed him around.
Today we stand in the shadows , praying that all that he stood for, his
humanity and humility, will percolate to each one of us that works
selflessly in ICS.

20 Benefits of Walking
Survivor’s Day was celebrated as always on the 2nd Saturday of
February, ie on 10th February at Palika Parking, Connaught Place with
help from Mercer who took over a lot of the volunteer duties while also
putting up a flash mob to collect people to take part in the entertain-
ment programme. While the volunteers joined in with real gusto, the
icing on the cake was the ramp walk of breast cancer survivors who
travelled from outside Delhi to be a part of this programme.
