THE MOON AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE TIDESBy Kailyn Riggs

WHAT IS THE MOON?

The moon is earth’s one and only natural satellite. It is fifth largest out of 166 natural satellites in our solar system. It is 238,000 miles away from earth. The moon is a contributing factor in why there are different tides here on earth.

HOW DOES THE MOON AFFECT TIDES? The moon has a gravitational pull that pulls the Earth’s water outwards creating tides like the Spring and Neap tides.

WHAT ARE TIDES?

A tide is the alternating rise or fall of the ocean or sea mostly twice in a lunar day, due to the gravity of the sun and moon.

IN CONCLUSION

The Earth’s tides, such as spring and neap, are created by the moon and the sun’s gravitational pull on the Earth’s oceans causing the alternating of tides through out the lunar day.
