Think Like a Detective
• Talk to people, get their opinion.
• Be suspicious; don’t believe
everything you hear, see the bills
and the records.
Measure
• Measure where possible, instantaneous or longer period data logging
Always Double Check
• Check different information sources.
• Collect aggregate and detailed data and information, process and compare.
• Sub meter and sub divide loads, study the profiles.
• Allocate consumption by energy type, function, month.
• Create different mathematical models and compare

Diagrams to Visualize
• Draw graphs and diagrams; it will help you to see different perspectives and think outside of the box.
• Put the profile data on graphs and try to read them.

Be Creative
• Tailor the XL sheet for each specific ECM.
• Never play with the engine.
• Use links as much as possible.
• Avoid entering data instead of formulas or links.
• Management vs technology
– Low cost/no cost management measures
– Energy manager must follow energy auditor
• Baseloading
• Part loading use a more efficient equipment for baseload and keep the old equipment for peak load
• 50% + 50% or 70%+30% etc.
Some Hints
Always get a good baseline
Account for double counting
e.g. Lighting ECM, efficient lamps and controls
Downsizing – base-loading
Try alternative technologies
Use Externalities
– Incentives, fines
Use avoided old reinvestment as negative investments
Example: Direct Benefits.
Dynamism of Energy Costs
• а) Energy saving project
• (temporary Energy Management)
• b) СЕМ
• (Constant Energy Management)
Importance of Energy Management
CONTENT
1. Some Issues of Energy Audit (Ali Korakan)
2. Ways to Improve ECMs (Larry Good)
PARTIAL PAYBACK (SIR < 1)
• Project may not be feasible (SIR < 1) on pure financial basis.
• Justify part of project on energy savings, rest for other reasons.
• Try analyzing just incremental costs.
CASCADING BENEFITS
• Cascade down for reduced consumption (EE).
• Cascade up for increased supply (RES).
• Avoid overcounting or undercounting.
NON-EXISTENT BASELINE
• Avoid fantasy baselines – no exceptions.
• Analyze ECMs for new construction using “business as usual” baseline.
MANAGEMENT vs. TECHNOLOGY
• Low cost/no cost management measures
• Energy manager must follow energy auditor
BASELOADING
• Save old inefficient equipment for peak loads.
• Understand when old equipment does more harm than good.
INVESTMENT/SAVINGS SCHEDULES
• 0-19 yr - Investments
• 1-20 yr - Savings
EXPECTATIONS
• 1%/measure is good average.
• Collect measures in audit to see total.
EXTERNALITIES
• Only have value in analysis if somebody will pay for them.
PRE-SCREENING
• To produce preliminary analysis, introduce two elements that LCC has but SPB does not: – Cost of capital (discount rate)
– Reinvestment schedule
• Show these two plus initial investment and annual net savings
• State all important assumptions.
• Can perform pre-screening of projects with 10 Steps spreadsheet.
