How does one keep from "growing old inside"? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people…. Taking community seriously not only gives us the companionship we need, it also relieves us of the notion that we are indispensable. -- Robert McAfee Brown
On the eve of a football game, Empire Runners members and families got together to celebrate our community. Freshly scrubbed and looking presentable in non-runner attire, we honored our most successful participants in the Grand Prix, and thanked some of our volunteers. By taking the time to visit with others in our community that we might see only occasionally, we are reminded what a great sport we participate in.
The evening’s program started with a rather unusual spectacle for many of us, a solo flamenco performance by Maria Howard, wife of top senior runner Andy. Opening our minds to the possibility, we experienced Maria’s passion for her art and a different type of entertainment. To hear her discuss her work on KQED last year, go to http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2014/12/28/my-spot-flamenco-arts-dance-studio-in-santa-rosa
In my opening remarks I tried to weave a story of how the postponement and later cancellation of the Last 10k due to flooding, while being a disappointment to many of us, involved heroic efforts by 3 individuals. Our Insurance & Permits administrator, Laurie Martin, had already secured the relevant permits months earlier from city, regional and state entities, then had to spring into action in a hurry when we changed the date. Race director John Anderson had to shuffle his Rancho Cotati HS student volunteers at the last minute, plus give up another Saturday anticipating the second race. When the race had to be postponed, ER offered refunds to any non-members who could not run the week later, and 36 people took us up on this offer. When the race had to be cancelled a week later, that number swelled to 130 who were due refunds, a task that fell on the broad shoulders of our registration director Jerry Lyman. Unfortunately there wasn’t a simple way in our software to refund these as a group, so Jerry manually credited each person, surely not the thing he had planned to do over Christmas week.
We usually recognize half dozen or so volunteers at our annual club party, but since Larry is retiring after 3 years as president, we decided to expand that list. Honorees receive a gift certificate to their restaurant or shoe store of their choice, a nominal acknowledgement of their

countless hours dedicated to you, the members, but what they really get is our gratitude. As well as the 3 I mentioned earlier, we thanked these individuals for their service to our community:
Chris Mason, Long-time Webmaster and technical supporter at most club races, past and current Board member
Doug Courtemarche, Valley Ford Relay director since 1991; STS host; volunteer group at Kenwood
Eric Bohn, Race Director of Salmon Creek
Bob Shor, Starter and USATF official
Bob Merritt, Race Director of Annadel Loop
Val Sell, Kenwood Footrace director, Resolution Run director, Race Director czar
Larry Meredith, President 3 years, past board member, training director
Gil Moreno, Membership director, ER booth, race photography and books
Will Ortlinghaus, past Board member, apparel czar, USATF official
Tanya Narath, treasurer extraordinaire, club part organizer
Before honoring the Grand Prix winners, Mike McGuire led a special presentation inducting my “twin brother from another mother” Brad Zanetti into the prestigious Hall of Fame. Joining our most accomplished runners with this honor, Brad spoke emotionally on the importance of our community in his running and family life.
Special thanks to Bill Browne for running a very prompt and accurate Grand Prix, Tanya Narath for organizing the party, with help from Shirley Fee, Luis and Melanie Rosales, the Skandera family, Tori Meredith and many others, Al Tagliaferi for another fine Italian feast, plus you for making us a community.

The Joy of Running
The Manufacturing area was abuzz with activity. Crossing the yellow/black safety line required donning safety glasses – those paragons of fashion eyeware which have eluded the houses of Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana – and ESD straps on one’s feet making your ankles look like a ten year old donning spurs after an episode of the Lone Ranger. Armed, I was led through a maze of work benches, racks of equipment and supply bins on portable casters to a bench where a technician sat amid this whirl of people, noise and machinery fully focused on his task at hand. He was biting his lip in concentration as he adjusted something – the focus of his attention with one hand while the other through outstretched fingers felt for signs he had hit his mark. He was interrupted.
“Here’s Rick,” said my escort. “I’ll let him know you are here.”
Rick cocked his head in the direction of my guide, raised his thumb to her lips and placed his index and middle fingers against the underside of her chin – a maneuver with which would seem routine enough to me shortly. She introduced me and reached back to take my hand to his. “Hi,” he mumbled although discernible enough to know what he was saying despite the ambient noise and with a smile with which I would become equally familiar.
The previous day a colleague asked if I would be interested in helping her friend prepare for a running competition. She had known I ran at lunch time with a group at the facility in Rohnert Park and thought I might be able to help. After a few questions about the extent of such assistance, she paused. “One other thing…he’s blind.” Another pause, “…and deaf.” Still a longer pause. “Are you still interested?” I said I would be – probably more out of curiosity that good will, but good will was in there somewhere. I had no idea what I was getting myself into nor a clue of what I was doing.
I sat before a machine which I would affectionately name Enigma – an LED display and keyboard emblematic of 1986, much like an adding machine. But it had a mirror image facing my new ward with no display but a braille interface for both keying and reading. My escort oriented me to the basics and we began communicating – “What was he training for? How much running had he done? What were his goals? How often and what times of day would work?” He replied rapidly and without hesitation. The display before me shot out text more phonetically accurate than grammatically correct, but certainly easy to understand. We concluded with an agreement to meet at lunch time – 11:30 sharp – to go for a trial run for me to assess his condition.
On the dot, he stood outside the locker room without his trusty white cane awaiting my arrival. As I approached him, he looked my way and smiled. With his hand on my lips and chin, I told him we should go outside and I would describe what we would do and he can help me figure out how to guide him. Outside away from the noise of the factory hallways, we decided on a simple 2 mile run out the access road. He described how I should guide him – put my left forearm next to his right, how to stop – grab his wrist and push down, how to turn – push left or move away right and he would follow, and warn of obstacles or rough terrain – hold his wrist and motion up and down quickly. I asked him to say aloud if we were going too fast or too slow and off we went. The trial run was uneventful, much to my relief. We learned how to match cadence and tried all of the guidance motions to get used to them. I thought it might work out. We would meet again the next day.
It was the mid-Eighties. I had just turned 30 – a new age group. I usually did the local road races and the Empire Runners Track Series. But my true passion had been running in a Runner’s World Corporate Cup competition with my fellow HP Runners every June. I was a dangling participle to this team of impressive
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | newsletter@empirerunners.org
runners, but I enjoyed the comradery and competition. Every once in a while actually did something useful for the team. We were in the middle of workouts on the track and putting in some more serious distance work on the roads and in Annadel. The additional work with Rick would mean double workouts some days. I’d never done this. I wasn’t sure what would happen. I would soon find out.
Rick and I ran almost every day, a little at first and then some more focused workouts. I was just mimicking what the team workouts were to a lesser extent, but he seemed to adapt well. I could tell he needed more conditioning but he was racing 100m, 200m and 400m so I wanted to get to the track a little sooner.
For a race to include someone who is blind, the track has lane stanchions with rope to guy them. The start for Rick was enabled with a mechanism he could sense when the gun went off. Apparently he was pretty good, but he wanted to get better. Competitiveness knows no bounds.
We used Sonoma State’s track – quick new and wonderful to run on. We developed workouts with accelerations and intervals and learning to run curves. I took careful note of times and helped him with stretching. This went on for weeks with some road work and track work twice a week. Rick was exhausted, but excited. I was excited for him, but I still didn’t know what the hell I was doing. And I was equally exhausted from the double workouts.
We spent his morning work breaks - he was on a production line with strict hours - talking about training sessions through Enigma. I would tell him about form, foot speed, speed endurance – things I had only recently been introduced to. Then we would practice on the track or on the road. He was a quick study.
The week before his competition, he had a light week. We talked about getting plenty of rest and eating well – apparently this works well for both beating a cold and running track. Come Monday, Rick returned to show me his hardware. He had cleaned up. I was impressed, really impressed. He was just beaming. Shortly after that we never interacted again.
Somewhere in the midst of our training, I got the idea that a 10K race would be good training – it was the maximum we had run our road workouts. The Ass-to-Ass was a popular race in those days – a half marathon from the Brass Ass Saloon where Summerfield Mary’s Pizza is now to their saloon in Cotati. They added a 10K race later starting and ending in Cotati which circled the HP site in Rohnert Park where we had been training. Rick was all for it.
We had trained on longer runs going out the access road at the HP site (a mile one way itself) onto Petaluma Hill Road and out Roberts Road past my In-laws’ place before turning around. We also ran further up the Hill Road, over East Cotati Avenue, down Old Redwood Highway and back on Railroad Avenue to the site – essentially the 10K course. We dodged traffic, navigated potholes and soft shoulders and avoided any serious consequences. I was always very nervous on the roads with Rick. We ran side-by-side. I had to watch traffic, identify hazards and watch my pace all while holding my left forearm to his right (this running style would haunt my form for many years later).
Despite his challenges, Rick had endless drive. He was fearless and he trusted me completely. His shins were a testament to his trials and tribulations – they were hamburger. I hurt just looking at them. For him, it was par for the course. I tried running once on my own during this period with Rick with my eye closed
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | newsletter@empirerunners.org
– flat, straight, grass – just to relate to what it must be like. It was terrifying. How does one overcome such impediments to be so upbeat?
The morning of the 10K, we started in a huge crowd in Downtown Cotati. Some people stared, some had no idea. We started out slowly and off to the side so I could steer Rick clear of the throngs of people and at least see where I was going. Past one mile, we could stretch out a little and pass those with more optimism than endurance. I was running in the Harvest Fair 10K once, driving the last mile up Brookwood to the Fairgrounds back gate when I was passed by a much larger build man running while jumping rope – a boxer-in-training I later concluded. “Keep going. Almost there,” he encouraged as he breezed by me. I was impressed and deflated simultaneously. Such must have been the reaction of some as Rick waltzed by them with me in tow on that sunny morning. As we passed and were passed, people would double-take and exclaim something like, “Wow” or “Amazing.” What they couldn’t know was Rick was deaf, so they whispered.
I told Rick before the race that when we got near the finish I would give him a sign to pick up his pace so he could show off some of his speed he had revealed in his track workouts. As we passed SSU and approached the crowds of Cotati, I let him know and off we went. He was straining but steady as we hammered toward the finish line. As we crossed the line, I gave him the full stop sign and he bent over as we all do when we’re exhausted. He had done wonderfully and I told him so. I thanked him.
I often marvel at how some people’s names fit their personality, much as owners soon resemble their dogs. I had a neighbor once – an elderly woman aptly named Grace. This is what occurred to me as I stood amongst the throngs of finishers and the rest of the crowd. Of this humble man whom I had met on a manufacturing line at Hewlett-Packard’s Rohnert Park facility in 1986, his surname said everything about him one needed to know.
I read with sadness this past week of his passing. I learned about his wrestling ability from his obituary – something I had not known but shouldn’t have surprised me. I had known he rode tandem bikes – as a stoker in case you’re wondering. He inspired many through his life. One doesn’t get a job as a technician making one of the more precision instruments ever conceived at the time, as was the case when I met him, out of charity. He had game. But his spirit and fearlessness and courage remain his imprint upon anyone who knew him. He leaves, I am certain, a grieving family. And yet they must be, as I am, buoyed by the enduring memories of this gentle man and his zest for life.
Rick Joy passed away January 16. He was 73.

“ACCEPTING THE HALL OF FAME”
Last Saturday night was a hallmark evening for the Empire Runners as they had their annual club party. There was excellent food delivered by Hall of Famer Al Tagliaferri, great drinks provided by a number of excellent wineries and beer from Lagunitas. The conversation was lively as always. Entertainment was provided by Maria Howard (Andy) dancing her ‘Flamenco Solo Dance’ in a beautiful authentic dress. Grand Prix awards were distributed for overall and age group recipients and a number of members were awarded for their outstanding work in keeping the club functioning efficiently. The evening ended with some great wins and excitement with the ever popular raffle.
This year the annual program had the addition of a Hall of Fame recipient. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame the recipient must be a member in good standing for at least 5 years, have achieved an 80% score (All-America level) in an official event per the USATF and perform significant volunteer work for the club. For more information on the Hall of Fame qualifications you can look up the award area on the empire runner site.
The Hall of Fame and the criteria was developed by the initial discussion group and is maintained
by the HOF committee, chaired by Ralph Harms. The first class was installed in 2008. The HOF recipient receives recognition at the Annual party, a nice plaque and slick commemorative book with the stories of each member, designed by Mike McGuire.
I was very fortunate to be this years’ recipient and want to thank the HOF committee, especially Ralph and Mike for all of their hard work and the special presentation. Following is my acceptance speech:
“Thank you Mike and the Hall of Fame Committee for all of your hard work, the plaque and the Hall of Fame book.”
To badly misquote Groucho Marx: I wouldn’t want to be a member of any Hall of Fame that would have me as a member…or so I thought about 8 years ago. After observing the first induction class in 2008 with Daryl, Mort and Carl and their impressive running histories I was seriously impressed with the Empire Runners Hall of Fame (HOF). In 2008 I did not entertain any thoughts of becoming a hall of famer myself as I didn’t have the running chops to be included. In fact, in 2010 it was John Harmon who made me aware that I had, indeed, achieved an 80% score in a local 5K. He then went on to explain what an 80% score was. I spent another year and a half chasing as many PRs and 80% scores as I could; in as many disciplines on the road and the track. Then a series of injuries to myself and my son, Michael, changed how I viewed myself, my running and my relationships. I had always respected my friendships within the Empire Runners, but they were much more. When Michael (my son) was injured, YOU were there. When he went to rehab, YOU were there. And when he came home, YOU were there.
The essence of this group is not just sharing a healthy life style or providing free races. It is the building life long relationships that sweeten our lives. In that, I feel lucky to have found this group for my family. My children Lauren, Michelle and Michael have raced in, volunteered at and cleaned up after hundreds of races. They
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | newsletter@empirerunners.org
have built their own Empire Runner relationships.
I would like to thank a few people as you don’t just get here on your own:
My wife, Bev, I thank you for giving me the time to train and socialize. Though no longer a runner, she volunteers, takes photos and has a very defined Empire Runners social identity. She is a champion of our sport and our group.
Thanks to my ‘twin brother from another mother’, Paul Berg; whether training, talking, eating or just ‘chasing Pam and 409.’
Coach, whose training schedule I followed and who supported my every improvement.
Val, who never leaves any stone unturned to find even another second of improvement and who pushed me to goals I would not set for myself.
Thanks to the Thursday night Brew Crew for those necessary social adjustments.
I feel lucky to run with HOFers: Thermo and Hutch who were the first carrots I chased and the rest of the Saturday AM coffee Bunch and Sunday AM breakfast club.
I have been truly inspired by HOFers: Darryl Beardall, Bob Holland, Ralph Harms, Kathy Van Riper and Shirley Fee.
I did not know Jim Ray but his story is strangely like mine, obtaining his best times as he aged. And where would we be without ‘Tags’ feeding our souls and his 31 minute 10K PR.
Thanks to the Hill Repeat Monsters from Grace, Medica and Wa-Tam; the JC Lawn Racers who pushed me to develop the speed I sorely needed.
Thanks to Jerry Lyman who has inspired me as a runner but most importantly has provided me “EVERY OPPORTUNITY” to pick up those much needed volunteer points.
Thanks to the Over 50 Senior XC Nationally 7th Place Team(Don, Ty, Andy, John, Paul, Larry and John) for the best running weekend ever and the Harmon family for sharing Seattle with us and my son, Michael.
Finally, thanks to a young man who pushed me at every workout, whose training pace feels more like race pace yet I couldn’t let a 9 year old drop me, even if he was an age group world record holder. Thank you Nehemiah (Skandera).
In conclusion, I now know that I am humbled to be in anybody’s Hall of Fame, but I ‘AM PROUD’ to be in the Empire Hall.
Thank you
[Brad Zanetti]

The Long and Short of It
End of the Line for Minimalism? Readers of this column know that a while back I transitioned out of my traditional running shoes and orthotics and into shoes that were pretty darn minimal. That transition occurred for me somewhere between 2011 and 2012. By the fall of 2012 I was wearing 4mm-drop shoes when I wasn’t running barefoot on the Slater Junior HS track and I was doing a lot of barefoot walking as well. I even wore 4mm-drop shoes when I ran the Biz Johnson trail marathon. At first it all seemed great. I was no longer wearing my orthotics and my chronic knee pain was just a memory. I was experiencing some pain and stiffness in my Achilles tendons so I kept that at bay with ice and massage. Then it all started to unravel. In late December 2012 I was doing a track workout at Montgomery HS when I felt an old, familiar and dreaded pain in my left foot near my heel. This was the beginning of an 18 month battle to rid myself of Plantar Fasciitis. I employed ice, massage, rest, night-splints and just about any trick I could think of. This was the end of the honey-moon. This was also the end of my flirtation with minimalist shoes though for a very long time I did not fully accept it. Although I went back to my good ol’ Asics Gel Cumulus shoes, I thought it would only be until I healed up from my fight with Plantar Fasciitis. By now it was the middle of 2014 and I enjoyed a few pain free months. But as my mileage increased in preparation for the St. George Marathon – the arches in both my feet were just killing me. I resisted the idea of going back to my custom orthotics but I decided to give a pair of Super-Feet a try. I wore these for a couple of months and even wore them in the marathon but
I never could get used to them. For one thing they are hard as a rock. They might work for some people but not for me. Shortly after St. George I ditched my Super-Feet. As of this writing I am still wearing my very traditional Asics Gel Cumulous sans orthotics. I have found that I must spend a fair amount of time doing “maintenance” to keep my feet flexible and relatively pain free but there is no hint of the chronic knee pain I experienced before going down the minimalist path. So, all in all I think it was a journey worth taking. Now it seems like everyone except the dyed-in-the-wool minimalists are wearing or at least talking about Hoka. If you have been in a cave understand that Hokas look like heavy orthopedic shoes. They look “maximal” but looks are indeed deceiving as the Hoka shoes in spite of the clunky-looking sole are quite light, and furthermore they are legitimately “low drop”. People rave about them. These are often the same people who raved about their Vibram Five-Fingers and other slipper-like shoes. Go figure. The nice thing is that unlike just a few years back a runner really has a wide-range of choices when it comes to shoes. You can still get Vibrams, or you can opt for Hokas or the Brooks Beast for that matter. Everything is available from minimal to maximal. It occurs to me once again that there is no “one size fits all” to running shoes and that what works for you today might not work tomorrow. As for me, I am happy in my Cumulous and happy to be without my orthotics. I don’t plan on jumping on the Hoka band-wagon anytime soon, but I may have to eat crow if you see me on the trail and I suddenly appear to be about two-inches taller. DM Peterson

“THE HUNT FOR WOLF_EYES, Vigilante Hacker Extraordinaire” by, Ty Strange, Beach Life Books, Santa Rosa, CA, 2014. Pp 349.
A vigilante hacker book? I thought this was a review of running books. Well for those of you who don’t know the author of “The Hunt”, Ty Strange is one of our very own. A very accomplished runner, long time Empire Runner, former University of Portland XC star and the leader of the over 50 XC team that finished 7th in the nation at club nationals in 2011. And an author as well; who knew? At his book signing I learned that Ty has 3 or 4 books in the offing including a book about running and runners. I am looking forward to a running story written by an accomplished runner. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
I was very impressed with this story. It read extremely well with nice style and pace. It was easy to read and the excellent flow made me come back to it often until I finished it. The setting of Palo Alto, Sonoma County, Las Vegas and New York added familiarity and interest.
The story is about a young Stanford University female student, Alex Smyth who has mad computer skills and uses those skills to develop an inventory program for her parent’s
grocery store. She also uses her skills to ‘hack” mostly just to see what is going on in big business. She has quite a reputation in the hacker world as Wolf Eyes. Alex on occasion hacks to even up the score for an underdog whom she feels has been taken advantage of.
A chance meeting with another female student leads her on the hacking adventure of a lifetime with millions of dollars changing hands. Alex is chased by the hacker police who turns her life upside down.
I think this first novel by Ty Strange is a good one and would be complete as an individual novel. I sense though there may be a sequel and would look forward to it as well. I think this fast paced story is very entertaining and I recommend it highly to all. I am looking forward to Ty’s next book.
Rating: 4/5 ****
Correction: noted in review of Swoosh last month I noted another book about Steve Prefontaine as a necessary read. I wrote that the title was Fire on the Track. That was in error as that is the title of the DVD. The Book is called, “PRE the Story of America’s Greatest Running Legend”.
Feedback: In reviewing these books, the opinion of course is mine, through my eyes. Because of that you need to know I am a bit of a statistics nut and find that splits and final 400/800meter times enhance the reading experience for me as our sport is all about times-finish/splits/etc. In the December review, “The Silence…” I found the book to read very well where others have told me there were too many statistics and too many races. I stand by my review but in future reviews consider my bias and if you read a few of my reviewed books you should get a feel of what I find entertaining. I hope some of you have felt the reviews have been worthwhile if even to provide with a book list.
Happy reading, Brad
