Economics of the Great Depression

Unemployment during the Great Depression increased extravagantly, sending families into poverty. Companies and families were far into debt, and so was the country. One of the economic factors of the depression was the use of the economic system called credit.

Social Effects of the

Great Depression

When people lost their jobs, they lost money to pay for their mortgages, leaving people homeless. They lost

money to pay for food, leaving families hungry. They lost money for necessities,

increasing daily struggles.

Culture During the Great Depression

The lives of people provided influence for the arts during the Great Depression,

such as the mural to the right.

Newspapers became increasingly popularas a source to receive updates about

the government and its leaders.

Life for African-Americans got even more strenuous. Though many African-Americans lived in poverty

before the great Depression, their living situations worsened as the property owners they worked for

lost their land.
