The Project and Goals

Working with local restaurants to encourage more

sustainable take out container options

Make a determination of how much a restaurant’s

commitment to sustainable practices weighs into

consumer choice

Show positive impact of sustainable take out

Where is the project at now?

Each municipality has chosen a restaurant

The green teams have engaged the restaurants and received their commitment

Containers have been chosen and are in the process of being ordered

A website has been purchased to promote the program

Challenges So Far

Choosing a container

Sustainability of the

commitment

Driving excitement from

the consumer

Next Steps

The Conflict Between Trees and Sidewalks

Trees and Sidewalk Damage

• The Problem: 1. Damage from trunk or root

flare where the trunk or root flare lifts the sidewalk

2. Damage from shallow lateral roots cracking or lifting sidewalk

• The Solution:1. Remove Tree

2. Cut Roots

3. Move sidewalk to curve around tree

4. Shaving the top of the concrete

5. Create a ramp using asphalt or concrete to meet uplifted concrete

6. Bridge over the tree roots

7. Use of “tree” root compatible materials such as permeable / pervious materials

@SJ_Program | #sustainablejersey | #njleague

• The Cause:1. Lack of space for trunk /root

flare

2. Shallow and surface roots displacing sidewalk as they grow and search for air and water
