Extensive amalgam fillings are very durable. Once they are removed, however, heavy metal particles occurring in large quantities need to be disposed of.
DÜRR SUCTION SYSTEMS
Worldwide demand is huge
Dürr Dental, a pioneer when it comes to suction systems for the dental sur-gery, looks back on many years of experience with the ever more impor-tant worldwide task of amalgam sepa-ration. Since the 1980s, more than 10,000 surgeries were equipped with Dürr amalgam separators “Made in Germany” – adapted individually to the existing suction system installed in the surgery. When you select a Dürr amalgam separator, you do not just take a decision for its reliability, but also for progress and innovation in dental medicine and environmental technology.

Responsible dental medicine
The use of dental amalgam in dentistry has been characterised by its outstand-ing properties for easy processing and long service life. Unfortunately, it does put strain on our waste water streams and the environment during processing and after removal from the oral cavity. Amalgam should not be part of the clinic’s waste water and this is why it should be collected from the waste water from each treatment unit. Modern dental treatment is consistently striving to meet this challenge.
Separation is mandatory
Separation is mandatory in many countries with laws and regulations requesting that raw waste water from treatment units must be reduced by at least 95 % before entering the normal waste water stream. As an example, the whole of Europe must conform to the ISO standard 11143:1999 which defines the minimum requirements for amalgam separators. For Germany in particular, the comprehensive design and inspection rules of the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBT) in Berlin are strictly followed.
Hazardous amalgam should not get into the sewer – this is a legal duty as well as a responsibility towards society and the environment.

71 % of the earth is covered with water. This is a sensitive and important ecosystem.
Every year a total of 800 tonnes amalgamis used in dental surgeries worldwide.

Amalgam separation according to
natureʼs principle
A whirlpool is characterised by large centrifugal forces. Dürr Dental makes use of this fact with its highly effective and patented centrifugal separation; whether it be for the separation of the mixture of air, secretions and solid mate-rials or for the separation of amalgam particles. Long years of development involving studies of flow behaviour and material optimisation have spawned high-end technology which is vastly superior compared to alternative sedi-mentary separators in terms of safety, maintenance and hygiene. It works fully automatically, is hydrodynamically self-cleaning and automatically indicates when a collection container needs to be changed.
DÜRR SUCTION SYSTEMS
Every year, a dentist produces an average of 340 g of amalgam waste. 22 % of this waste finds its way into the suction system and ends up in the amalgam separator (if fitted) or into the waste water.
5
The results for the surgery are a perfect combination: Hydrodynamic self-cleaning function for the centrifuge
High foam tolerance High separation performance Low-noise and vibration-free operation
Simple installation and maintenance with minimum effort
Reliability and conservation of value over many years.
Legally required quality of used
water
The suction system, and in particular the amalgam separation, in a dental sur-gery has to function smoothly without interfering with daily work routines. For this reason Dürr Dental focuses strongly on the performance and reliability of the separation systems. Of course, Dürr suction and environmental technology meets all the legal requirements where ISO 11143:1999 is concerned.

The Dürr CA 4 works completely inde-pendently within the suction system: As soon as used water is produced in the treatment units, the amalgam separator switches on automatically. The flow rate of up to 16 litres per minute is proof for the consistently high performance, living up to even the most challenging require-ments, with the operation of 4 worksta-tions in parallel. A display element in the housing offers visual and acoustic information on the operating mode. The separation efficiency of nearly 99 % exceeds by far the legally required mini-mum value.
Operation that suits the surgery
The Dürr CA 4 controls maintenance tasks in the surgery: It monitors the fill level of the amalgam collecting car-tridge electronically and signals when a replacement is due. The replacement is carried out easily by the competent assistant. There is no pre-planned date or notice required, which takes consid-erable strain from the team. Packaged and disinfected, the cartridge is safely stored, waiting to be picked up.
Universal solution for large
surgeries
The easiest way to equip multi-room sur-geries with amalgam separation is the Dürr CA 4. Installation is comparatively easy. The only condition for so-called “dry air” suction systems is that that water drains need to be laid out sepa-rately from the waste water. The central installation in a “wet” suction system, by contrast, requires only one single spittoon valve. Counselling and plan-ning based on the different suction sys-tems play a vital role when it comes to making the right choice of investment. With this regard, the specialised dealers and service partners of Dürr Dental are available for you worldwide.

DÜRR SUCTION SYSTEMS
The amalgam centrifuge is self-cleaning and achieves a tested separation effi-ciency of nearly 98 %. If an additional rinsing unit is installed, the permanent water film prevents the deposit of parti-cles and the coagulation of blood. This also improves the hygienic condition of the whole suction system.
Amalgam separation next to the
treatment unit – CA 1
If the air/water separation system cannot be replaced, it is possible to use a Dürr CA 1 amalgam separator in a practical housing next to the treat-ment unit. It offers a convincing sepa-ration efficiency of nearly 98 %, and the robust design makes it a reliable component of the suction system. The Dürr CA 1 is ideal for the modernisa-tion of a single-workstation suction unit with integrated air/water separation (e.g. Dürr VS 300 S) or a single-work-station water ring pump.
9
Efficient air/water separation
and amalgam separation within
the treatment unit – CAS 1
In many countries, the planners of sur-geries use “dry air” suction systems on account of the difficult installation con-ditions. With such systems, the separa-tion of air and water takes place in every treatment unit. The easiest way to retrofit amalgam separation to ex-change the air/water separation is by using a Dürr CAS 1 combination sepa-rator. Small, compact, silent and easy to in-stall, it combines air/water separa-tion and amalgam separation in one single unit. The Dürr CAS 1 can be inte-grated in many treatment units and is installed ex works by many leading manufacturers. The two-phase system with centrifugal separator and dynamic sepa ration turbine attains a much higher separation performance than traditional methods.

amalgam separation
A Dürr suction system generates the negative pressure required for a fault-free and perfectly safe hygienic treat-ment. A continuous suction power of approx. 300 litres volume flow per minute makes for perfect visibility in the preparation area and prevents aero-sol clouds, which could be harmful with regard to hygiene! Before the sep-arated used water is drained off by the waste water pump, it is led into the centrifuge, where the existing amalgam particles are separated. More than 97 % of the amalgam is collected in the collecting tank, whose fill level is auto-matically monitored. If a fill level of 95 % is reached, a visual and acoustic signal indicates that the cartridge needs to be replaced. The access to the car-tridge is easy, making the replacement simple and quick.
The Dürr 3-in-1-VSA technology
For single-room surgeries, Dürr Dental combines the complex system consist-ing of suction unit, air/water separation unit and amalgam separation unit in one single combined suction unit – all on a single drive shaft. This leading technology not only reduces the main-tenance effort, but also the number of appliances. Top suction performance combines with efficiency, robustness, a long service life as well as a reduced maintenance effort.
In case of older single-workstation suc-tion units, retrofitting with an amalgam separator is not economically viable. In such cases, and where amalgam sepa-ration is legally required, the long-term use of modernisation makes it advisable to invest in a new Dürr VSA 300 S for the surgery.

removal
Amalgam separation is not a one-way street. The separation is followed by safe storage in the collecting cartridge. As Orotol® Plus is added, the content of the cartridge is hygienically treated to kill bacteria. The collecting cartridge is picked up and reaches the disposal process of authorised recycling com-panies. With regard to the transport, please observe the regulations apply-ing to your country.
Disposal in a qualified way
The disposal of amalgam waste from dental surgeries is subject to strict regu-lations. Therefore full amalgam collect-ing cartridges are picked up directly at the surgery by authorised waste dis-posal companies.
DÜRR SUCTION SYSTEMS
100 % of all dentists can rely on the disposal system of Dürr Dental.
With the best recommendations
Amalgam separation is one of the cen-tral disposal issues in a surgery today. Systems by Dürr Dental help reduce the costs for this to a minimum. And the small effort is worthwhile for the envi-ronment, as is shown by current surveys. For instance, 134 t amalgam reach the raw waste water of dental surgeries each year. A mandatory 95 % amal-gam separation could reduce this value down to 6.7 t. This means that environ-mental technology is the technology of the future.

The hygiene of the suction system –
infection and investment protection
Aspirated saliva, blood or extracted filling materials permanently contami-nate the suction system with dangerous bacteria, funghi or viruses. Furthermore, deposits of cement or plaque tinting tablets represent a considerable poten-tial for clogging in the lines. Protection from infectious diseases and the safety of the system components gas separa-tion, amalgam separation and suction unit require disinfection and cleaning of the suction system on a daily basis. Effervescent disinfecting products could damage the materials and are there-fore out of bounds. The Orotol® brand products by Dürr Dental, by contrast, show their cumulative power without
