Praise to God
Greetings to All!
I recently heard of an individual who kept a tambourine close at hand. Why? Just in
case “praise breaks out!” What a fantastic and precious memory of an individual who
lived out a life filled with praise. I invite you to reflect for a moment on the idea of
offering praise.
What is praise? Praise is said to be offered to God for who God is and is the imperative
of the faithful, formed in part of this purpose.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies.
(Psalm 18: 3)
The people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.
(Isaiah 43: 21)
How do we offer praise? Praise can be expressed in song, in verse, or in prayer; and in the words of
the Psalmists, is never ending. Additionally, praise can be expressed not only through the worship
experience, but through everyday actions and deeds. It can be offered anytime, anywhere, and in any
place!
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
(Psalm 34: 1)
I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the congregation I will praise you.
(Psalm 22:22)
Who offers praise and why? Praise is offered by the faithful as an expression of grateful hearts, but
Scripture also records that all of creation-nature, the heavens, the angels-offers its praise.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps; fire and hail, snow and frost,
stormy wind fulfilling his command. (Psalm 148:7, 8)
The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
(Psalm 19:1)
Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! (Psalm 148: 2)
So as you make plans to journey forth in the coming days, weeks, and months, be sure to keep your
tambourine close at hand because you just never know. If someone asks you why, just say, “In case
praise breaks out!”
He has done marvelous things; I too will praise him with a new song!

Many of you already watch Franklin’s fireworks from our church
property, so let’s make it a family event. Bring your own
family’s picnic supper, lawn chairs and/or blankets, and a
celebratory mood. We’ll gather at 6:30 p.m., enjoy our picnics,
play some games, sing some songs, and settle down about
dark to enjoy the fireworks. Since many non-members like to
view the fireworks from our property, it’s a perfect opportunity
to welcome them with a cold drink and a warm smile!

VBS registration closes on June 1st. Spaces are filling up – remember there is a cap on preschool and
kindergarten classes this year. There will be no onsite registration and class sizes are limited, but
children of volunteers are guaranteed a spot.
Our VBS is only four days, June 15 - 18, from 9 am to noon and we welcome children ages 4 through 6th
grade. The registration fee is $10/child, but the fee is waived if you are able to volunteer for all four
days! (Scholarships are available, contact Kim at kjoiner@fpcfranklin.org) To register your child and sign
up to volunteer, go to www.cokesburyvbs.com/fpcfranklintn. To make your registration payment, go
to https://fpcfranklin.logosconnect.com/. If you have any questions, please contact Casey Pianta at
VBS@fpcfranklin.org.
Our fourth and final day of VBS is
based on the action word
“SHARE!” Through Luke 24:1-22,
we will offer children a look at
the miraculous moment when
Christ’s women followers are
the first to experience Jesus’ rise from the grave and the first to share the good news with the rest of
Christ’s followers. We will experience this story as a model for how we can actively experience the good
news of Jesus by seeking and sharing God’s goodness with others through our words and actions. This
story shows the importance of spreading the good news.
VBS loves snacks! Are you able to donate some? Our VBS participants
are going to need lots of fuel during our action-packed days and we
would greatly appreciate donations of pretzels, Goldfish, vanilla
wafers, animal crackers, and Country Time lemonade mix. We would
also happily accept Wal-Mart gift cards! Please place donations in the
bin under the VBS bulletin board in Wilson Hall. If you have any
questions about VBS snacks, please contact Elizabeth Stivers at
elstivers@gmail.com.

As many of you know, there is Mission work taking place right now in Beirut with some of our FPC members. Please keep
these volunteers in your prayers as they continue to serve!
Mission Trip - Beirut
There is much to share about our time so far in Beirut. I'm blown away by the generosity and hospitality shown to us. No
one is hungry because we are force fed at every turn! This week, we made clinic in the Christian center run by our hosts,
Chouki (pronounced Chowy) and Maha (his wife). This center is Baptist, I think. They have a women's group of Syrian
refugees that come to the center to hear the word of God and to fellowship and sometimes receive oil or rice twice a week.
It has gotten so big and women are starting to bring their husbands, too. I think we saw close to 600? patients this week so
far.
As expected, we've seen first hand the heartbreak of war. Families separated, family members or friends killed by mortar
shells, normal lives uprooted and tossed to a foreign land. The Syrians are seen as second class citizens here, and they
aren't legally allowed to have certain types of help. One of our translators mentioned that she had asked God to let her do
anything to serve him EXCEPT help the Syrians. Comically, God did just that.
My translator, Sylvia, is from Aleppo as are several of my patients. She is 26 years old and has received a full scholarship to
medical school. However, because of many things including the war, she can't leave her mother, for whom she is the sole
provider and caretaker. So, she has to work full time to make ends meet (all of her bills are about $700/month) and had to
turn down the scholarship. This breaks my heart-she is such a bright and gentle soul. Despite her trials, she smiles all day
and touches the arms of those who cry and talks to them about Jesus and hope.
All three of us have cried a bunch already, which is expected on this sort of trip. We can certainly feel your prayers over
here, and I'm so thankful to be from a congregation that celebrates Godly love that transcends stereotypes and
preconceptions. The thing that has struck me the most this week is how SAME our lives are to the Syrian refugees. All of
them come in with their medication lists, lab tests, and X-rays from their family doctors in Syria. Today, I did an annual
physical for a man who had bypass surgery. It just hits home that our happy little comfortable lives can be destroyed in an
instant, and we too could be displaced people. So strange. I was expecting urgent care from uneducated people who had
never seen a provider. Instead, I've seen my typical patient population. It really reminds me that we are all in the same
world, we are all broken, and we all need Jesus.
Tomorrow we head to Byblos to see the Cedars and to serve the Druze in a hospital setting!!!! Real exam tables! Wahoo!
Till next time. Claire Crunk

Breaking Bread - A Poem in Honor of Our
Wednesday Night Live Cooks
Bread is broken
In an upper room, feet wet from washing
At table with a stranger met on the sad road from Jerusalem to
Emmaus
Among Jews and Gentiles in a Centurion’s home
By the glimmering lake with five thousand friends
In a hall called Wilson
Bread is broken
French bread rich with butter
And chicken spaghetti, which shouldn’t work, but does
Tortilla chips stacked high on Taco Night
Bread firmly, lovingly embracing hot ham and cheese
Cornbread that settles on the tongue like honey
Topping off the grand champion meatloaf and mac and cheese
Lines out the door for dressing and turkey
Bread is broken
Through the torn and fragrant edges
Through mouthfuls of meatloaf
Sweet tea poured like wine
Children laugh
Friendships deepen
Families slow down and sit
Free from the wheel of activity
To talk and eat and love
Every time, every place, every meal
He is there, as he promised
It is said
Blessed are the feet that bring good news
Let it also be said here
Blessed are the hands that make good food
Feeding bodies
Feeding souls
Sharing hospitality in the form of scalloped potatoes and spaghetti casserole
Holy work, done with joy
And we are grateful

We enjoyed a presentation from several young dancers.
They presented a liturgical dance to “Shout to the Lord”.
The girls danced to glorify God and learned the meaning of
the movements as they related to scriptures. Thank you
Tammy Horton and Angela Everett for working with them
for several weeks.
Our intergenerational event included a reading of “In
God’s Hand’s” by Rabbi Laurence Kushner and Gary
Schmidt. The church wide summer reading program Read

One Day I Wrote Back:
Interacting with
Scripture through
Creative Writing, by
Jane Herring. Jane
wrestled with the
contradictions,
puzzling stories, and
difficult sayings in
scripture - until she
discovered the power
of interacting with
them through creative
writing. In this book,
Herring leads us to talk
back to those scripture
passages we don’t
understand, and ask
questions, explore our
lives, plead, praise and
ponder. She provides
reflection questions,
and simple, practical
exercises to encourage
writing. Herring is an
ordained PC (USA)
minister serving as a
hospice chaplain. We
will read the scriptures in
the book and explore
them together. Whether
you are a writer or not,
you can join in the
exploration! This year we
will again ask everyone
to bring a dish to share,
and the church will
provide drinks and
dessert. Click here to

A Summer of Psalms
June 28 - September 6
The Psalter is the hymnbook of ancient Israel, and has helped shape the life and faith of
generations of Jews and Christians from generation to generation. The psalms express the full
range of human emotion — joy, sorrow, anger and lament. The ancient Israelites believed we
were called to offer ourselves honestly before God in worship, and through this honesty we would
find freedom and healing.
Pastor Chris will be preaching from the Psalter this summer, inviting us to hear again these
beloved poems and find strength in them for our own walk of faith.

Hymn of Praise: Earth and All Stars
(Glory to God-The Presbyterian Hymnal #26)
Earth and all stars! Loud rushing planets! Sing to the Lord a new song!
Oh victory! Loud shouting army! Sing to the Lord a new song!
He has done marvelous things. I too will praise him with a new song.
This hymn text was written for the 90th anniversary of St. Olaf College in 1964. The author, Herbert
Brokering, comments, “I tried to gather into a hymn of praise the many facets of life which merge in
the life of community. So there are references to building, nature, learning, family, war, and
festivity.
“Many of the images through which I visualize the rhyme and rhythm of the gospel came to me in
Nebraska and Iowa. Seasons, emotions, death and resurrection, bread, wine, water, sun, spirit-have
made great impressions on my imagination. Words want to be seen. Words have their roots in
visuals and images. We see what we know. We imagine the language of faith. The image power we
have is an enormous gift from God. We are in God’s image.”

Dear WNL Friends,
Thanks so much for the generous gift certificate to Kroger! It doesn't
seem possible that we have completed another WNL year. Thanks to
all our volunteers and members who help make the program a
success! Enjoy your summer! Thanks, Lucy Battle
What a great year! Thanks to each of you who made our WNL
experience one of the best. Many thanks for the generous gift card.
We are so honored to have been on the receiving end of one of Chris’
poems. It just goes to show we never know what’s in store on WNL
nights! Love, Nancy Moody
In life and death, we belong to God. Anne Eberle, a
loved member of our congregation, died Tuesday,
April 21. Anne and her husband, Bill, loved
worshiping and attending Wednesday Night Live
until they moved to Nashville. She was a kind
woman with a great sense of humor. Anne’s
Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be
Saturday, June 6th, at 11:00 am with visitation in
the parlor at 10:00 am. Please keep Bill and their
family in your prayers.
