-Communication without human interaction
-Assigned IP addresses-M2M-IPv6-Reduction of waste, loss, and cost
The Internet of Things is a new, innovative approach to wireless communication.
-AT&T- American Telephone and Telegraph Company
-Incorporated in 1885-7th largest company in US
-Assigned task: wearable, connected home, connected car
Our objective from AT&T was to create an IoT Product that would address a need or opportunity in society.
Parent’s in todays society still struggle to maintain adequate supervision of their children.
-First chose wearables
-Baby monitors are imperfect
-Parents may lose child
-Sickness
The best way for us to gather information was through the use of research and surveys.

Baby Watch SurveyWould you be willing to pay over $150 for a product that monitors your baby’s well-being?
Have you ever momentarily lost track your baby?Have you ever used a baby monitoring system before? What problems have you experienced with previous baby monitors?Would you be ok with your baby wearing a wristband?Would it ease your anxiety if you had a system to monitor your baby?
What major issues do you come across regarding your baby’s safety?
Would you be ok with your baby having a device that tracks their location?
Our survey results developed the customer needs that would define our design.
The results of our survey defined part of our specifications.
Sensors - there are five types of sensors needed in our baby monitoring system.
Technical research further defined our customer needs and developed detailed specifications.
Our specification determined the characteristics of our design.
Baby’s Wearable:
Rubber Plastic
Other ideas: Metal ,Silicon, Teflon
The specifications fueled brainstorming for the materials of the design.
Parent’s Wearable:
Steel
Type of wearable for child: Wristband Anklet
Other Ideas: Sock,Belt, Hat, Necklace
The specifications fueled brainstorming for the location of the wearable.
Type of wearable for parent: Watch
Monitoring devices:
Accelerometer
Other ideas: Thermometer, GPS, Heart Rate Monitor, Video Camera, Microphone
The type of monitoring sensors that would go into the device were brainstormed using our specifications.
Pulse Oximetry
Adjustability:
-Velcro
-Links
-Elastic
How the devices can adjust and communicate was brainstormed using our specifications.
Communication:
-Wifi
-Bluetooth 4.0
-Radio Waves
Batteries:
- Alkaline
-Lithium-ion polymer
-Lithium cell watch batteries
-Solar
Concept screenings determined what types of designs, materials, and sensors would best suit our product.
Our ideas were further evaluated using a weighted matrix, finalizing the characteristics of our design.
We decided to keep the accelerometer, thermometer, heart rate monitor, microphone, and GPS.
Based on our evaluation, our device will incorporate the accelerometer, thermometer, heart rate monitor, microphone, and GPS.
The final design uses an anklet with built in sensors and an electronic watch that intercommunicate
Our watch interface uses a dial that rotates to move between sensors on the screen.
The watch also features built in alerts.
● Rollover
● Crying/Coughing
● Fever
● Extreme heart rate
● Moving
Using wifi, the anklet communicates data retrieved from the sensors to the watch.
