The Circulatory System

Warm Up:Compare and Contrast the following systems in complete sentences~ Excretory System~ Urinary System

FunctionTransportation system by which oxygen and

nutrients reach the body's cells, and waste materials are carried away.

Also carries substances called hormones, which control body processes, and antibodies to fight invading germs.

Circulatory System Works with….Digestive System~ breaks down food and nutrients Respiratory System ~ provides oxygen that cells need to release

energy Transports materials from the digestive system

and the respiratory system to the cells

Parts of the Circulatory System

Divided into three major parts: The Heart The Blood The Blood Vessels

The heart, the lungs, and the bloo d vessels work together to form the the circulatory system.

3 Types of Circulation:

Pulmonary circulationCoronary circulationSystemic circulation

Pulmonary Circulation

Movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again

Coronary CirculationMovement of blood through the tissues of the heart

Systemic CirculationSupplies nourishment to all of the tissue located throughout

the body , except for the heart and lungs

Blood VesselsHollow tubes that circulate your blood

Three Types of Blood Vessels ArteriesVeinsCapillaries

ArteriesCarry blood AWAY from the heartHeart pumps blood Main artery called the aorta Aorta divides and branches Each region of your body has system of

arteries supplying it with fresh, oxygen-rich blood.

ArteriesTough on the outside Smooth on the inside Muscular wall helps the heart pump blood

Have strong, muscular walls

The inner layer is very smooth so that the blood can flow easily

CapillariesVery thinOnly one cell thickConnect arteries & veins

CapillariesFood and oxygen released to the body cells Carbon dioxide and other waste products

returned to the bloodstream

Valves are located inside the veins. The valves only allow blood to move in one direction.

VeinsCarry blood to the heartReceive blood from the capillariesTransport waste-rich/ oxygen-poor blood back

to the lungs and heart Valves are located inside the veins Allow blood to move in one direction

Close up of heart valveHeart sounds are made by the valves

as they open and close

BloodPumped by your heart. Travels through thousands of miles of blood

vesselsCarries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste

products to and from your body cells. Made up of liquids, solids and small amounts of

oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Red Blood CellsRed blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of

the body. Takes carbon dioxide and transports it back to the lungsAbout 5,000,000 Red Blood Cells in ONE drop of blood. Made in red bone marrowCirculate for 120 days

White Blood CellsWhite blood cells protect the body from germsGuard against infection, fight parasites, and

attack bacteriaNumber of WBC’s increases when body is

fighting

Platelets

Platelets are blood cells that help stop bleeding

Forms a net-like structure for clotting

PlasmaPlasma is the liquid part of the bloodAbout half of your blood is made of plasmaThe plasma carries the blood cells throughout the body• 10% dissolved gases, salts, nutrients,

enzymes, hormones, wastes, and proteins.

90% waterPlasma is made in the liver.
