THE CBD OF LONDON

by Agnieszka Kaczkowska

CBD’s of London

London has three Central Business Districts:the City of London, the City of Westminster and the Docklands.

This presentation is about the City of London (also called the ‘square mile’), which is the area located north from the river Thames, right in the centre of London.

The City of London:

Purposes of the CBD

The CBD is the ‘downtown’ of the city and has the highest land costs. The area is mainly used for business, services and entertainment purposes – it’s full of shops, banks, offices, bars, restaurants, cinemas, etc.

The City of London at nightOn the picture we can see the famous London Eye made by the British Airways. It’s popular among tourists because of the amazing view of the city from the top of it.

Problems of the CBD

1. High land costs

Problem:Due to the lack of

space, the prices of the land are very high and unaffordable for many people and companies.

Solution:Tall buildings were

built to increase the space for offices.

The Bishopsgate Tower project in the City of London

The tower is currently under construction and should be ready before the end of the year 2012. It will not only provide space for offices, but also look quite amazing and, hopefully, it will nicely combine with the architecture of Central London.

2. Pollution

Problems: Solutions:

Air pollution, water pollution, environmental pollution – caused by dumping of trash into the river, the cars, people throwing trash on the streets and sidewalks.

More floral areas to maintain cleaner air, laws prohibiting the disposal of trash into the river, special machines cleaning the streets and sidewalks.

Beep-beep!

Problem 3: TRAFFIC.

Problems: Solutions:

The streets were built before the cars were invented. They are narrow – narrow enough to not let the cars move around comfortably.

Due to the lack of space, it’s hard to find a place to park the car.

Public transport (2-floor buses, the underground) was made to decrease the traffic.

Motorways and main streets were made where possible.

Parking places with multiple floors were built.

4. Population Decline

Problems: Solutions:

The resident population of the CBD declined from 200,000 in the 1700’s to less than 10,000 today. (less people = less customers)

The underground and railways from the City of London to other regions were built to make it easier and faster for people to get to the downtown.

King’s Cross Railway Station, LondonThe train network across London allows many people to get from one district to another faster and more easily.

Conclusion

The City of London has solved its problems

pretty well by building many public transport

networks, building high-rise business towers

and forming more floral areas.

Great success!(‘’The Gherkin’’)
